location: a random clearing in a wooded area on campus
time: evening of november 5th
mentions of: bear stone, abilene perez, hollis navarette, and alison thornton.
tldr: sage is very sad after her fight with bear so she goes on a nature walk to talk to her sister. some things become clearer, but doubt sneaks its way in.
love of mine, someday you will die, but i'll be close behind i'll follow you into the dark
sage trudges through the woods of campus, knowing that when the spot is right, it'll call her. it's silly of her to think that her sister's footsteps have walked this path before, but if she closes her eyes, it's almost as if she can feel alison calling her, guiding her. leading her to something. she doesn't know what, but she senses her sister. or does she? is this not all a figment of her imagination? a coping mechanism? a core belief that alison, in order to soften the blow of losing her forever, sent sage a best friend? a sibling? someone who could walk alongside her through this earthly journey until sage was finally called back?
implausible. ridiculous. a fool's belief, one that wasn't true. one that could never be true. sage's faith had been tested so many times throughout her life, but as sage approaches a grassy sort of spot, she feels the pull-- whatever it is-- call her to sit down. whether it actually is alison's spirit speaking to her from beyond the veil, or a whisper on the chilly november wind, or perhaps even sage's own hallucination is yet to be seen.
no blinding light, or tunnel to gates of white, just our hands clasped so tight waiting for the hint of a spark
sage pulls off their jacket and sits on the ground, removing their shoes and socks despite the chill in the air, but needing to feel the earth under their feet. grounding. no chance of floating up above among the wisps of clouds, no chance of doing anything other than sitting with their discomfort. with one crystal in each hand, cross-legged, sage runs their thumb over the selenite wand and breathes in deeply. their breath is ragged, shaking, anxious, terrified. terrified of what they will uncover as they journey inward. terrified of how their faith has been tested and how so much stock has been put in someone who, perhaps, did not have her best intentions at heart.
sage feels trapped, and the panic starts to sink in, but they force their eyes shut and they force their breathing to come to stillness, calm. but shame spirals up, them making an absolute fool of themself at karaoke by dedicating a song to abilene and hollis on bear's behalf, the fact that bear hadn't even blinked at the fact that abilene hated her for seemingly no reason, and sage's own fury at how unfair it all was bubbling to the surface.
and the only person they wanted to speak to in that moment was alison. so sage started the whole story from the top, felt their nose run and their vision get blurry, but all the while focusing on the whoosh in and out of air in their lungs. at the reminder that they were still breathing, but perhaps alison was not.
if heaven and hell decide that they both are satisfied illuminate the nos on their vacancy signs
why is this so upsetting to them? in the stream of their mind's eye, they force themself to ruminate on it as they breathe. they believe that alison sent bear to them-- someone who entered this state of consciousness under the same moon that sage and alison had. the detail of bear's life that they knew, the extent of bear's life that sage had memorized, and… for what? to be brushed aside the second bear found someone who could fulfill that romantic and sexual love? for sage to know that their love, platonic as it may be, was lesser than? is that what the core wound truly is? had sage wrongfully put bear in a place that he didn't ask to be in? that alison was dead, or worse, and that she hadn't sent bear to them? that sage had made all of this up to cope with the fact that her sister was gone, and there was no bringing her back? that the police had given up, their parents divorced anyway, and there was a slim to none chance that alison would ever be found?
so now… sage had no choice but to rely on the moon, their breathing, and the echos of a whisper on the chilly wind as they felt the panic start to sink in, the sobs pulling in from deep in their chest at the realization that no matter what happened, sage was still a ten year old child who had lost their sister and missed her. and that despite bear's humanity, and his own wants and desires, all of which were perfectly valid, bear alone could not fill the gaping hole that sat in sage's soul at the concept of losing their other half. this was grief in its utmost devastating form, at the expectations that had been put on someone who had no idea, and at sage for being shocked by a moment of selfishness. of carnal lust that frankly, sage didn't experience. never really had. and maybe that's where the betrayal is, in that sage knows that bear does not feel the way that they do. that bear can experience these things, and sage can't. and it feels like a betrayal.
which is fine, but it's not going to get them a best friend back. if bear ever even really was one. or maybe sage was just a means to an end, a willing and able accomplice in his quest for world domination. perhaps they'd be replaced tomorrow. maybe… sage is stunned to realize that their eyes are open and tears are streaming down their face. and sage would swear on all that they believed in-- little as it was, at that moment-- that they could imagine alison standing behind them, placing a hand on sage's shoulder, assuring them that everything was going to be okay.
at least, sage had to hope so.
if there's no one beside you when your soul embarks then i'll follow you into the dark
