So the Joes are awesome. Literally no one is surprised.

It really tickles me how many people were talking shit in the comments over on the bird app, about like - 'WHY do you want to see the scene with Steve and Eddie? we know it's not gonna be any different!'

And guess what - it actually gave us a TON of insight into the scene itself: both the stuff that made it to screen as well as stuff that didn't. The "awkward guy way" thing just tickles me so much. Like - have they looked at Joe Keery? Have they actually watched the way he acts as Steve? I mean, he can do awkward but not like in a guy way. Not a straight guy way, at least. That's what they're implying, there, too btw - make no mistake. But I'm sorry, Duffers, you can't put that man in a Scoops, Ahoy! uniform and expect me not to babygirl him all up.

The thing that I love about this scene is the Duffers fully intended for this to be interpreted as guys-being-dudes by being jealous of each other for silly reasons (ie. they basically just didn't know each other, but both made assumptions) and being competitive with each other essentially sight unseen (as far as we know). Stupid straight dude bullshit, in other words. But instead of that - instead, with the Joes working their magic, the scene comes off more like Eddie is trying to just confess that he was wrong about Steve and just... appreciates him for who he's actually turned out to be. Which is very different from the chest-puffy jealousy over who was going to be Dustin's role model the Duffers plotted out.

The scene starts out with Steve running to catch up with Eddie, and Steve sort of extends an olive branch - takes a second to thank Eddie for coming in after him. Which - if you consider it from Steve's perspective, he's absolutely right to do this: Eddie's new to this monster-hunting shit. He didn't ask to get tangled up in this whole Vecna mess - he was just trying to sell a hallucinating cheerleader some weed!!!! - but it wound up that way, anyhow. He's terrified and confused and is trusting Steve and Robin and the rest of the gang to get him through this and out of trouble. Of everybody in that boat, Eddie had the least reason of all to jump in after Steve, but he did it anyway. Still, Eddie insists that Steve saved himself - but hastens to compliment him, saying it was a very Ozzy move. Of course, Steve has no context for this compliment, so Eddie rambles a little bit about it - almost like he's ... nervous? (I wonder if Robin's not the ONLY one in Team Watergate who babbles when they get flustered around a crush - hmmmmmm, Edward?) So that's completely unsolicited compliment number one. Next, there's the bit about Dustin talking all about what a badass he is (I like that Joseph tweaked that so it's not Steve's badassery he's doubting, but rather that something about Steve in general as a person isn't adding up - which, Eddie's right!) and how he insisted on it (again - love how Joseph reworded this - DUFFERS y'all are straight up trash at dialogue). So there's compliment number two. And then Eddie doubles down on that one, adding he's not sure why he cares what Dustin thinks, but it's obvious that he looks up to Steve. So, there's compliment number three! It just feels like Eddie's trying to get Steve on his side in this scene - basically the exact and entire opposite of what the Duffers were actually going for with it lol - almost like a pre-emptive effort on his part to break up any potential jock-versus-weirdo bullshit that might sprout up while they're in such close quarters together for extended periods of time. Eddie's just very kind and open and NICE with Steve, here - and, again, it's all in how Joseph and Joe play this stuff together. Like, the body language stuff that I noticed? All those personal space issues? That's ALL JOSEPH. Basically none of the physicality of this character comes through on paper, at all. I've said it before and was kinda hyperbolizing? But seeing these script pages really makes it clear and underlines it for me now: EVERYTHING good and lovable and special about Eddie truly came from Joseph. It's just facts.

So that means, as well - that all that staring from Steve was allllll Joe.

Joe fully misinterpreted the hell out of 'flustered', too, and I'm here for it. lol

I love how this scene was supposed to be Eddie trying to talk Steve into chasing after Nancy, while also acting like a jealous baby about Dustin having other friends besides him, and instead all I'm getting is 'Steve is off to horny jail, teehee'.
