☕️ - Emlyn and seagulls
@takingchancesmakingmistakes || xo
It’s been so long since I’ve written anything about Emlyn, it almost feels foreign now. He’s not as vocal as he once was, either. I think that’s mostly my fault, though, because I haven’t been super invested in writing lately. With Em, seagulls are like way in the foreground of anything I write that explains where he’s from, what his daily life is like, stuff that shaped parts of his personality etc. I was heavily influenced by Llandudno for that, definitely. My dad actually went for a mini three day break there last week and everytime he called me, I could hear the buggers in the background. It is kind of a staple. It’s no different to what Emlyn regularly has to deal with and because he is an enormous fan of the pier food, particularly doughnuts, he’s had encounters with the gulls a lot.
I think in parts I wanted to add that for humour and it just wormed its way into his background all on its own until it became such a huge aspect of everything that defines him. I also based it on the fact that I’ve lost a number of ice creams courtesy of those seagulls because they give zero shits about personal space. The last time it happened to me was three years ago and I had been standing at the railing about halfway along the pier and the seagull came out of nowhere ‘cause I didn’t see it swoop down and took off with all the ice cream and half the cone, leaving me with the remainder of its mess. I remember that one more so because it was the most recent but also because I’m exceedingly timid in public and recall that everyone around me was laughing.
Em actually handles those situations a lot better than I do, but he’s now more pissed off when it happens, whereas he used to brush it off with laughs. Now, if a seagull tries to swoop down and take off with his food and actually succeeds, he will pick up a full doughnut and lob it at them. I’d have started doing that years ago if not for the fact that when they steal stuff from you, it actually really hurts.. both their beak and their feet get right in there and cause a lot of scrapes, aha.
I dun want to believe tha’ there is no good left in the world, or tha’ people carn find ‘appiness. Just.. give it a little while longer an’ see if yer dun feel any different ‘bout it ? Surely there is somethin’, right ‘round the corner, waitin’ for yer to find it. I understand well enough to know when someone is bein’ a complete arse, ‘bout wha’ they ‘aven’t yet found. It dun take more than a bit of faith, trust.. an’ ‘ell if yer wanna go all out, some pixie dust. In all these yurs, ‘ave never known anyone to ‘ave given up so easily.

You are the sunshine, Em. You're the reason people keep going when they've got nothing left to live for. You inspire hope and you're a ray of light on everyone's shadows. Don't let anything your old man says to you find a home in your heart. You're worth more than he will ever be brave enough to tell you.
