Since when was the day she had first known?
Most days Furiae wondered if, by some chance, she had always been like this. But it only took a moment before she began to backtrack against such a conception with a single question: Then why did she know? Why did she know this wasn't normal?
It was the very thing that kept her hesitance from thinking any further than the initial strike when those thoughts entered her head. She knew that there were "normal" sibling relationships, and it was in that knowledge that she knew that she couldn't have been this way from birth. Surely, as much as she wished it were, it wasn't natural. This was something that had to be fixed, which is what Furiae struggled dearly with for as long as she could remember.
She remembered asking herself, 'Why?' at least every other night when she was by herself, reprimanding herself at first for each and every thought and fighting to redirect herself. At the same time she knew of the normal bond between siblings, she had come to realise that she had gone so far and long that she had lost all knowledge of what that "normal bond" had even looked like to begin with.
From what she could remember, in it's earliest days those feelings had shown themselves in the form of nothing more than simple observances. He had always been like a knight and gentleman to her, helping her up when she stumbled, doing the brunt of difficult and labourous tasks where her own body couldn't - The two shared jokes together, played, chatted and shared secrets. He was nothing but kind and patient to her, even in the times she couldn't be with him.
Perhaps she was perplexed at first that she was the only one who seemed to see those good qualities in him.
The other women of the court always seemed so quick to call him things like "Boorish" and "Violent", whispering to each other of his "Obsession with the blade" - Though in Furiae's eyes, she had only seen a burning passion the likes that no one else had seemed to possess in the wish to fight for glory and honour.
'Had I been among them...' Furiae would think, glancing over from her mother's side.
He was such a gentle-hearted and charming older brother, undeserving of the misplaced slander that those potential "Brides" had put so unfairly on his reputation, that Furiae just knew she had to protect him. "At least until someone worthy comes to his side," she thought to herself - And until that day would come (And eventually even then, selfishly she began to hope that it didn't), the only one worthy of her brother's affections would be her. She would be his Queen.
... If only she had the chance.
Perhaps, in retrospect, that simple vow was where it had all begun.
When the day had come that the doomed Goddess seal had been placed upon her, the fallen princess had realised completely then that the world truly only sought to keep her from attaining happiness.
She really couldn't have anything, could she?
Her family. Her country. Her home. Her betrothed. Her brother.
And as if the tragedy itself hadn't been enough, she would be sentenced to live out the rest of her days reflecting on those losses from an isolated prison - With quite literally the weight of the world on her shoulders.
Furiae cast a final, longing look towards Caim from over her shoulder as she was lead away by the priests. She wondered if this would be the last time she ever saw him... Though her expression saddened, and her lips parted as if in protest as she was ushered on, no words came out.
She wished that, for just once, she could protest. To protect, fight back and have at least one tiny little thing, even if it was a hope she knew would fall diminished - But it was always out of her hands.
...So in an act of final, stifled revolution against this world that denied her happiness, Furiae decided to keep loving anyway.
|[For the dragon: What was it about Leonard that spurned you to stay at his side? How did you meet him?]|
Among all the dragons of the Union, the elderly and flightless green dragon was the one that one particular dragonkeeper had tended to the most.
As it had heard from him, it's wounds were far too great to be left unattended - the dragonkeeper, a tall, blond, imposing and yet gentle man, spoke commonly and highly of his life, his brothers, and what had been lost of his family to what he thought was deaf ears, yet curiously, the dragon had noticed, was always among the last of those who worked in the keep to return back home. Even as he spoke such joyful and proud stories to himself, applying the herbal salve to the numerous cuts and wounds, the dragon he had tended to couldn't help but notice the deep sadness that had been weaved beneath his tone.
...Leonard, similar to the Green Dragon itself, was an overall quiet man - it was the very first thing it had noticed as it lay eyes on him. Different from most other in the Union troupe, though the Green Dragon held firm belief that they would come to learn someday, that "Leonard" who spoke so frequently to it had held a special reverence for dragons. He had confessed it himself; he had hardly felt himself worthy of such work, and it shown: Words that spoke reassuringly yet not condescendingly, his head and gaze that was often lowered beyond necessity, and his respect which shown in his frequent journeys to find remedies and food of his own means. Even as lowly such a task as dragonkeeping was considered amongst his more "human" peers, it was none other than the observant Green Dragon - who had, for the most part, done little more than idly sit and sleep (so it had appeared) - that had noticed he not only thought the opposite, but far in contrast to whatever "lowly work" was... He had thought himself even lower.
It didn't know why the one who had given his heart to all things under his care had given it to all but himself, and it couldn't understand how. It had sacrificed its own self for the humans who had beaten and imprisoned it in return, and where other dragons had grown resentful and bitter, it instead had held faith and forgiveness - but still... It had never hated itself. It hurt it inside, that a human could do that to themselves.
So one day, as he had fed and tended to its wounds like any other day, the Green Dragon lifted its head, and spoke its first words to the dragonkeeper:
'Why must you treat yourself with such disrespect?'
There was a long silence - he hadn't reacted in the same fear so many other humans had to its speech, though the dragon had found little relief or joy in that comfort itself. Where there was little shock, the majority of his expression had been read with shame.
...It was from there that the Green Dragon, now having made itself known to have been listening to the many assumed solitary conversations Leonard had had, began to learn more about the man and his life. It learned why he had so often stayed within the company of it and the other dragons than return home. It learned about his affliction. About the life he wished he could have led if he hadn't been "Cursed." How he wanted to fix himself.
It had wanted to help. But still, the Green Dragon didn't fully understand. It didn't understand human morality - what it meant to hurt a child. The importance of innocence among humans. It understood pain, and of course, it understood very much that humans could and often would inflict it on others for their own gain. There were different types and degrees of pain; the sting of a skinned knee compared to the betrayal of a loved one was different. But the depth of such pains eluded it.
The Green Dragon thought and thought about his confession that day. Following that day, their discussions gradually became deeper - the dragon asked and listened to hear him speak of all manners regarding all manners of morality, equality, the war, and at times, it responded. Beyond mere appreciation for his company and what insight he had given into the lives of those creatures it had loved and watched over for so long, the dragon found that they had shared a set of ideals: a world without war, where humans, dragons, and all manner of creature could live in harmony... He had voiced his doubts of it at the time, and though it was hesitant to speak, the dragon voiced assurances that it could be done - surely, it had remembered a distant era when humans had cooperated with one another. Long, long ago.
...Of course, as comforting as its words were, it had sensed the dragonkeeper's doubt - at the time. The days passed, and alongside the violent tides of the war between humans and dragons, tensions between the two races grew. And as the elderly dragon's wounds increased, Leonard's concern did with it.
"Surely there must be a way..."
Fire. Blood. The screams of both children and adults alike. Through the smoke that had shrouded the keep in a thick smog, a man laid dead on the ground before the Green Dragon. An important man. He had never stood a chance... Not again him.
Had it been some sort of attempt at recompense for its betrayal that the Red Dragon had taken him away before he could finish the job? The Green Dragon stared quietly at the faintest glimpse of crimson scales, made murky through the smoke, and yet highlighted by the blaze, before silently turning its head down to the dead man beneath it.
His death had not been kind, the black cloth on his back further darkened by circled stains of red blood. It grew around the frozen body in a thick, deep red that reflected the flames from outside, splattered against the wooden walls and the worn scales of the dragon that looked down at the body in observant silence.
'........'
Its friend was gone. But still, he was in one piece. The Green Dragon knew what must be done.
...
The priest was no longer the man that the Green Dragon knew. In order to bring to life to the rich and vibrant community they had so often spoken about in their past, it had turned the corpse into a madman. Only days after it had been rescued and returned to the safekeep of their village, Leonard had already become his own worst fear - and whether it gladdened the dragon to see him free of his burdens or pained it to see Leonard no longer held in mind the "morality" or "innocence" he had weighed so much importance on in the past, it had, for the first time in a long while, no answer. If anything were to be said, however, it was that the bond they had forged from those days remained strong as ever. It often spoke words of hope and encouragement for the priest when he could find no words to say for the war-torn families and survivours that had lost everything. It often spoke only to him. After the first of the "incidents", when the last of the Leonard it knew still remained, he had come to the dragon, looking sick and pale as ever.
It thought about that day often.
There were times the Green Dragon wanted to ask him, 'Do you think it was worth it?' but, whenever it looked at those eyes, it found it no longer had the will to ask.
There were times that Leonard wanted to ask it, 'What have you done to me?' but as soon as he had found the will to speak it, he found that he no longer cared.
The dragon wondered certain days if, by some chance, it's intermingling in human affairs had led it to learn selfishness. Yet looking upon the village, the small, tender world it had always longed to see, and feeling the familiar hands of that friend tend to the worn and cracked scales as they always had, it thought back and never could remember a time it felt quite so happy.
Alright so to note before anything I had a literal essay typed out and ready to go at about,,, 1???? AM???? The night this was sent
but then I forgot mobile Tumblr hates me right now so I hit post and lost it forever 😔
Then I wrote this but fell asleep in the process at about 4AM and woke up the following morning, and after days of working on NOTHING else on Tumblr but this, finished it after a lot of on and off work (I was still resentful and petty about losing my first one), and am praying the gods won't get in the way of my thoughts on this because good LORD
I've tried to include everything my original post did (albeit a lot less messy) but....
So to start, whoever came up with the idea that a ship is "good" based off of how pleasantly compatible and not toxic/problematic the people involved are is a fucking liar
I don't talk a LOT about shipping given the nature of this blog and that the topic doesn't come up very much??? At least on Tumblr lmao
But what some people might not know is that while I'm someone who believes that literally everything and everyone is inherently,,, "pairable" (It feels better to say than shippable), no matter how little they've interacted or how unconventional/potentially problematic may be, I am also VERY picky about shipping to where there's only been a handful I've ever really been invested in (2 OC pairings, 2 pairings involving canon characters) and the rest I usually bump off either for taking up feed space and not really caring or not being slightly moved at because my brain is picking at it too much.
Whether I like a ship or not ultimately comes down to two things:
1. Is the dynamic THERE? or are the two characters just trope fodder
When it comes to the happy couple, power couple, sunshine/grumpy, etc. etc. I DO enjoy these tropes, but more often than not they end up being boring for that being next to everything about the characters themselves. I'm always eager to know stuff like what drew them to each other and continues to draw them to each other, what caused/how their previously established dynamic was able to evolve to where it is now, what fuels their particular dynamic, and ofc their own established characters outside of it. I don't often indulge in romance-type things outside of those campy us romcoms from the 00's but I've seen a few very forgettable couples in media (I won't blame Disney for being targeted more towards children, but you'd expect more out of couples like Cent and Two ESPECIALLY for that's more or less just "They're in love!" And I'm just,,,, yeah. that's been established 😭
2. The actual portrayal of the ship. My autism brain is VERY stringent about this, literally you could have everything what was just discussed and if it doesn't stack up in a way that really makes sense, it will stick in my mind like an itch I can't reach and I likely won't shut up about it for the next month.
I dunno how to explain it, when you have a certain pair/set of characters (Who are made of differentiating backgrounds, circumstances, etc. which may affect them in different ways), and they gradually get to understand/learn more about each other as time passes and in turn grow some semblance of a bond/care as humans do to the point it could be deemed a romantic(?)/intense enough "bond" that could manifest itself in any which way depending on what's been established in those characters backgrounds, how they already and HAVE interacted with each other, their current circumstances, etc. etc.
Sometimes, especially in a darker piece of media like Drakengard, the way they manifest as a "ship" or "pair" isn't always a conventional or even healthy so much as it is a result/consequence of those raised emotions and their bond. When I see something that should stack up to be toxic or potentially even twisted and problematic be written as something undeservingly sweet and "cute" it gets under my skin like nothing else. Like differentiating Nabokov's Lolita, which is an absolutely GUT-WRENCHING book about CSA and the effect it has on the victim later on in life, and lolisho circles, which are.... Yeah. It's also why the all too popular good girl/bad boy trope gets under my skin for how often it's just putting up with a guy's shitty behaviour and then him magically changing at the end to "justify" it and ughhhhhh you know the spiel
ANYWAYS, WITH ALL THAT ESTABLISHED. THEM.
I think what really strikes me most about Leonard and Caim's whole relationship without even considering shipping is just how much there is to compare/contrast, like...
As far as differences go, they're nearly polar opposites in just about fucking everything, resulting in the all too well-known clash in personality we like to write lmao. There's a lot to be said in these two different aspects of their characters, like the spontaneity/suppression, deflection/guilt, revenge/recompense, fighting to live/fighting to die, sadism/masochism, reckless bravery/reckless cowardice, and it's goes into their backgrounds as well, with Caim's upbringing in royalty and Leonard's likely in peasantry/coming from the general lowerclass before even his life as a hermit, and even in design (the blond/brunet contrast is a VERY popular design choice in a lot of fiction, usually with the blond being established as the "good conscience"/more naive/comic relief/etc. of the two and brunet, ironically, usually being an established lead or main character with more of an idea/maturity/so on in contrast.)
And while it's easy enough to just say opposites attract and use that as argument enough, what I think really would pull them together as far as shipping is concerned is much more in what they share in common (what little they fullheartedly understand of each other) in contrast
The biggest points I think are definitely sharing the role of older brother, which Caim (at least, I think, you'll have to tell me) kinda carries more subconsciously and/or at the back of his mind while consciously going "Older brother? Oh yeah... That thing. That's the thing I am" and Leonard eventually carries both consciously and subconsciously down to his very mannerisms (And of course, mainly in my Leonard's case where these smaller scenes are more relevant), often adopts that role of caretaker to just about anyone and anything whether he knows it or not — Seere, Arioch, Caim, etc...)
What REALLY interests me between them is their shared background, though. The thing Caim and Leonard both (possibly?) really know or at least have a hunch about is that both of their family was lost to the Empire. And THIS, whether it's actual knowledge or just a hunch, I think is not just the general basis for the two of their characters, but is largely the stem for the friction between the two.
To explain, it's mostly their role/perceived role in the tragedies of Caim's parents/Leonard's brother's that makes for their character schism — The difference between action, in Leonard's case where he's thinking "If only I hadn't done that" and inaction, in what I'm guessing is Caim's case, where he (may) be thinking "If only I had done something". Whether either would have actually changed anything aside, I think that whole action/inaction perception being what led to their families' deaths in this occasion is largely what leads into the people they are by the time they meet, of course, but also like
It's the reason they're so tense with each other in the sense that, at either's core, they see in the other exactly what led to their losing everything to begin with. And being near that is terrifying for them, whether it's Leonard's apparent indifference towards life or the prospect of wanting to live digging up that sense of "There's a threat and I need to do something about it" or possibly some insecurity about the lengths he takes that "Fight" between the fight or flight response for him, or if it's Caim's apparent insensitivity that brings up a sort of reminder not only of what he did as far as involvement in his brothers deaths, but a terrifying glimpse at the callousness and harm he could cause by just... Not caring for anything but himself.
So naturally, seeing a far much worse version both of what they could be and in a way, what they were stemmed from just about the same circumstances nonetheless is a major contributor to their issue with one another. A giant case of seeing their own insecurity/fears reflected in the actions the other's taking specifically to avoid their own past "fault" and going "How can you be as foolish as I was at what was more or less the only point of similarity in our lives?"
So this is where it gets into actual shipping talks, and MAN
im so sorry it took so long lmao
But explaining it in the case of shipping, on top of the growing fondness for people who are placed in these kinds of survival and/or traumatic situations being a thing that humans tend to do, like... It's what I just explained as that mutual fear/agitation with each other is even somewhat based in a vague fondness (perhaps not as personal) in not wanting to see their tragedy reappear again.
I typically believe that when developing attractions beyond anything platonic, the more you see of people and their humanity beforehand, especially in stressful and/or potentially lightening situations, the quicker you end up getting closer to each other (or at least, from one side you might) ESPECIALLY when you can play a part in helping and aiding another's life yourself for both ends. I kinda mentioned it earlier ofc to but I also think that ESPECIALLY when it comes to fictional ships, the way those feelings grow is (or maybe, should) be like growth of their pre-existing feelings of what's been established already — Growing more intense and/or obsessive with perception of a person of interest, and changing with understanding — that is, assuming they want to change/understand.
A looooong long time ago you mentioned the idea of Caim's growing violence towards Leonard the more he realises he might care (gods forbid), and honestly, that's exactly it — it comes together PERFECTLY for all the points mentioned earlier. There's not much I can say given it's mostly been throwing darts at a board for ideas and seeing what's just "neat" and what looks like the headlights of the train that may or may not be approaching to run us over but the other thing I can really pick at is the "unrequited" aspect which is where things get messy but veeeeeery interesting
I mostly see this on Leonard's part, given he has not only a few ✨pre-existing conditions✨ (to put it mildly) and what he feels for Caim I think may be a platonic/familial fondness at best, or downright terror and resentment at worst. It was briefly mentioned a while ago, once again, the idea that Caim, who generally grazes as he pleases and is ever the conniving little lad, may try and approach him out of convenience (I imagine both as a quick and easy way to dodge anything serious while also, of course, getting that a vague sense of satisfaction/fulfilment from it?) And generally depending on exactly how this is done, Leonard's full-hearted involvement is spotty at best
The chance of him actually returning or even understanding that he's an increasingly obsessed-over object of "affections" (however you may like to call them) is very low compared to him just,,, going along with it as most shit that happens, either citing the whole "fix him" bit himself and taking anything that happens afterwards as "punishment" fodder into his ever-evolving guilt complex. Where it could go from there is generally a mystery, but there's one thing I'll say: I don't think the general thing will be pleasant lmao and im not saying that negatively, mind, just the opposite
SO.
Would it be unrequited? Most likely.
Would it be toxic? Definitely.
Would it look a little like this cursed-ass video I stumbled across on YouTube that hasn't left my mind for three days? We'll have to see.
But most importantly — It's INTERESTING, the dynamics are there and always have been, and it goes without saying I don't have to worry about your portrayal skills in the least. 20/10.
I am begging for a Caionard sweep this summer please you don't understand 😭
Send ( rage ) for Leonard to talk about how anger affected him throughout his childhood.
... It may have sounded absurd to others of even slightly different standing, as Leonard had just come to realise it within the moment, but quite simply put - Anger was a luxury he didn't often have the time to afford. At least, not entirely in the sense he didn't feel it so much as it was the interests of the community that quelled it. Perhaps that significant portion of the calming peacefulness he carried with him came as the result of such a lifestyle — Still though, to say he had no moments where he was completely without any anger would have been a lie. With a somewhat embarrassed rub behind his neck, Leonard sat, thought for a moment, and eventually spoke.
"The forest had often served as a refuge for many frustrations," He recalled, "In my youth, it was uncommon for any child to dwell on such things as hate or anger... It was what we shared with each other that was most important. Yet, for those who found it necessary to relieve their anger, the calm of the forest was often seen as a place of reflection — and sometimes, great danger..."
Another pause. It filled Leonard with a certain heaviness to think back on the home of a village he abandoned; the hopes and expectations of the friendly faces around him he had let down... The chirping birds and trees he had climbed in his youth as means of escape from those expectations even then, the same trees boys the age of his brothers had climbed in his absence, never again to be a place of frustration, tears, love or joy again with the destruction of that small town at the hands of the Empire. All the memories and experiences that had been made in forest over it's history vanished with it. It was just another part of the woodlands now to anyone who came across it, and soon, not even the ruins of that town would be able tell the story of those trees.
Leonard's heart rang with guilt. Unlike his brothers, he wasn't sure if he could have been able to save them. Unlike his brothers, who he had the blessing, in a sense, to be able to see again, all the faces of those friends and the people he had grown up with...
...He had failed them, hadn't he? Leonard turned his blinded gaze downwards. Just as he was as a child, it wasn't anger that filled his heart — But disappointment and self-contempt that rose in it's stead.
Send ( rose tinted ) for Leonard to talk about a childhood memory he used to view as positive, but now sees as negative.
"..."
The question came as a bit of a challenge to the hermit, who, despite his later shortcomings in life (generously put), had a relatively pleasant childhood that, while fulfilling, hadn't often shied away from such common ailments as famine, plague, war... "A gift not given to nobility", as such tragedies — Happenings — were commonly spoken of by mouth of a number of villagers. To starve, to see death, to suffer, the large range of emotions that came from and out of it, as Leonard had been taught, are what makes life fulfilling. What is life if not experienced in it's entirety? Pain was a reminder and a gift — though Leonard had been growing increasingly aware of the importance of the presence of joy in one's life, as well. He often hadn't recognised the necessity of that light till some other like Seere had come to remind him of it.
Leonard sat in deep thought. A memory, an early one, came to mind of the crunch of an arm belonging to a famished body under his foot as he walked — He couldn't have been any younger than five... Was he? He remembered it as the day he was explained to what "Death" was. What starvation was. "Everyone shares what they have, but it isn't always enough," his mother had said. Another memory; this time of a red-eyed man brought to death at the hands of a group of villagers armed with simple farming equipment. He saw no carnage or gore, heard no screams as he stared — Only a crowd of turned backs and the sounds of metal ripping flesh. He turned away before they could be finished — but from what he heard from his friends the next day, the body had been deposed of in the forest depths. Of all the memories of the winter illness that took the lives of those near and distant to him as if they were nothing more than a casual loss, of the spread of influenza and infections when spring and summer came with blooming flowers and biting, starved animals, it was that memory of plague and war that stuck with him the most. Neither were explicitly positive, and yet, they were happenings that came with enough understanding they couldn't be deemed as negative, either.
A positive memory... He thought about it hard for a moment, and not long after, he finally came to an answer.
"... A boy had once come to visit me when I was young." Leonard's jaw tightened. "He was a fine lad. Though many had grown too doubt me, it was he who had insisted upon our friendship. Had it not been for his kindness, I doubt that I would have ever been capable speaking confidently to those of my village. And yet..." A pause. Leonard's throat tightened, and he rushed to swallow it back. "...I cannot help but feel regret that had we never met, then perhaps..."
...At the very least, it would have been a relief to the other that he had so suddenly disappeared. Perhaps he never would have had to leave to begin with.
...But, such theories were only passing delusions. A part of Leonard knew it was a lie, almost like a hypothetical fantasy made to keep from the prospect of inevitability. Leonard continued to tell it himself anyway, however — "If only I had done that", "If only I had avoided that" — and whether it served as a kind relief or further pain to the now silent hermit, one could only guess. He was simply desperate. Leonard looked on in pain.
Verseday! Questions for my muse - Lukhege 1.3||Soldier of the Union
⚪ - What are small things that mean something to your muse
Growing up, doing each other's hair was always a somewhat intimate gesture reserved for the closest of friends and family. His village had been tight-knit, and having a mother and older brother (Occasionally, his younger brothers as well) always there to fix it when it was a mess left him truly blind to just how uncommon it was after being left on his own. Perhaps it takes him by surprise not just to be shown such kindness in a time of war so intense it seems that the very world has reached its end - Not to mention being in the front lines of it, nonetheless - But that the very action serves as a somewhat bittersweet gateway to those memories to those simpler days living with his brothers, as well. For his memories and his upbringing, it was an act of great affection and significance - And regardless of how much of that old life he's left behind, the perception of that intimacy won't so easily leave his mind.
... Another thing, though he wouldn't quite so easily admit to it as the last, is small gestures of psychical touch. Something like a hand or a pat to the shoulder, even if made casually, has a habit of lingering in the soldier's mind for an especially long time. To any outsiders, especially those who know of his upbringing, the answer why is clear enough - Though Lukhege himself had and could never put a finger on it... Even if he allowed himself to acknowledge it, to begin with.
🔴 - What are bigger gestures that are important to your muse
Polishing any equipment of his such as weapons or swords, or taking the time to help or complete any chores in his stead takes a lot of work and time, and Lukhege is well aware of this. Typically, favours done for him helps him to feel far more adjusted within his "Family", as he sometimes prefers to call it, and serve as a great alternative to his warming in contrast to any deeper conversations or attempts to "get to know him" that would otherwise count as a great gesture... Chatting about his past, or even generally deeper topics, is a quick turn-down for him.
To feel validated and supported in his efforts through those favours, however, to feel as if he truly is being cared for and counted among others, comes nothing short of a great reassurance for him.
🖤 - Can your muse be selfish?
If he knows he can get away with it.
It isn't necessarily that Lukhege hates being selfless towards others (Whether out of comradery, respect, and an overall agreement with their views or in trying to prove himself or in worser cases, an attempt to get on their better side to avoid any negativity or harm directed his way in the future) as much as it is him simply living off instinct - It is a world where every man must fend for themselves, and having been tasked with the responsibility of his two younger siblings atop his chores as the eldest cared for the dragons, Lukhege fights with each opportunity to take what he can for himself - As long as the eyes of others are off his actions when he does deign to think for himself, that's all he needs.
With those outside the Union, such as civilians, however - He doesn't mind acting to serve his own self-interests at all.
✋ - Can your muse be rude or unfriendly?
Perhaps some could consider Lukhege's briskness and straightforward attitude uninviting, particularly when in the midst of a task or training, though he's learned well enough not to say anything outwardly demeaning or rude towards his fellow soldiers - While not the brightest or most inviting, Lukhege still follows basic courtesy and small-talk when approached, taking care never to state many disagreements or other such things that can otherwise put him on thin ice. To a majority of civilians, however, while generally just a bit more curt unless otherwise provoked, he's developed a bit of a bad habit of using force or even harming civilians - Or anyone else "below" him, as a soldier of the Union - Simply when he feels like it.
While not aware of it himself, it very well may be some internal attempt to take back power for himself after spending so many years, especially as a child, stuck under the Union's thumb - Simply inflicting the pain he had been caused in his past onto others.

//I bless 1.3 everyday for the chance to explore a solid enemy dynamic between these two because *deadass*,,, they've had it all there? Both closely or equally matched in strength, having conflicting ideologies and DEFINITELY having their moments where that divide could have resulted in a spat if leonard wasn't such a fuckin coward shaking in his boots during the garrison, but the fact OF Leonard's cowardice and guilt resulting in that and Caim not,,, being completely batshit insane, not to mention that the stakes are high enough (The end of the world) that they're really mostly just forced to get along till that's over at worst and develop some kinda small bond of comradery and/or friendship??? over it at best is great, I'll def get into that later but then 1.3 kinda comes along and asks
//What if they DIDN'T have those things holding them back? Leonard isn't made a coward by a wish to die and his extreme sense of guilt. Whatever sense that kept Caim from going COMPLETELY batshit resulted in him losing all sense completely (albeit, gradually). That, AND not only is the world no longer faced with a threat that affects both of them in the sense they need to come together, but challenges their ideologies and philosophies on life (Particularly the Pacifism vs. Warmongering aspects of it) that causes them to split completely. Set that up with the fact that (Later), they both become similarly/equally matched at a completely insane level virtue of dragon's blood, and (maybe throwing arioch into the mix as an assist trophy, though she deserves FAR more) we have ourselves literally the most metal fucking enemies ever
//... Which forever makes me sad we didn't get to see a showdown with them in 1.3. Granted, the Arioch shit was fan-fucking-tastic, I couldn't have asked for a better alternative way for him to go out, but... *Sigh* ... That's where we come in though!! We gotta write either an alternative take where they can actually showdown or like a small thing before then where they can spat briefly (? But is there even really stopping them? XD) again and match each other's strength where they're both cracked up on that blood because damn......
//That said, at the same time I really do wonder what that proper enemy dynamic would look like between them in DOD1, but that begs the question - Sure, if it comes down to a fight we all know that Caim is the last one to back down, but that begs the question - What's there to overcome Leonard's grief and cowardice and uh,,, the concept of the entire world ending to get him properly mad at Caim?
//.... Iunno. Probably Seere. XD
//Circling back, their opposite contrasting natures ALSO makes their friendship bond extremely sweet and heartwarming in a sense, both in the vein of Caim's "Guess I care about this slow dumb sack of shit now, STOP ADMIRING THE FLOWERS AND HURRY IT UP ASSHOLE" and Leonard's "He's like an angry little brother if he was sent from hell. calm down please, where the hell are you even getting all that energy? my back hurts, i want to go home"
//Of course, they have their own multitude of reasons why they wouldn't dare actively show anything that could tip off the small part that's kinda warmed up to them, though they both show it in the smallest and most subtle of ways that I feel neither would really notice in most cases, though if it had stopped happening for one reason or another they may just sit and realise how unnatural or otherwise unecessary that kind action really was, in a sense
//I like to think it's a small part of their contrasting natures they both secretly find comforting or,,,, "enjoyable"??? but not quite or even have slight envy for about the other, Caim's "I do what I want and bet you my left nut I won't care about the consequences" attitude contrasting Leonard's repression and perhaps Leonard's peaceful, somewhat hopelessly optimistic "I wish we just lived in the kind of world we didn't have to fight and deal with all this death and misery" maybe bringing Caim back to that simpler time when the broad, general view of the world really was just that for him
//Of course, it's the main thing they hate about each other, especially at it's worst - Caim's willingness and eagerness to kill and harm a bunch of children who, in one sense are innocent, but in the other provoke a certain desire in the both of them, is as shocking and infuriating to Leonard as Leonard's terror and repulsion at the same thought is to Caim which is why Leonard's Regret is literally one of the most PERFECT ally chapters in showcasing their different characters still, as far as that kind of "brother-in-arms affection" runs between the both of them, I like to think they have a certain vicarious envy in regard to those same facets.
3. Where did they go to school? Were they a good student? What was their favourite class?
Leonard never went to school, much less had any kind of training in academics. Instead, he was raised by his father who taught (Or rather, tried to teach) him most everything from hunting, to smithing to age old wisdom in the ways of life, values, the forest, and finding one's way around the many magical creatures that dwelled in it.
Even despite his best efforts and much to his parents' frequent frustrations, he was exceptionally slow in picking up any of the skills or crafts they attempted to teach him. He did, however, grow particularly good at remembering and applying any spoken wisdom to the best of his ability, which later resulted in the "Big-brother"-like image he had made not just literally, but figuratively in the eyes of the village as well.
Leonard never exactly looked forward to being taught how to hunt or smith metal, being a stressful atmosphere where he had never particularly taken much pride in his work (At least, if he could get anywhere with it to begin with) grew to be somewhat of a nightmare of his earlier childhood. Instead, he found the time he spent being able to traverse further and further into the woods without any fear or anxiety with the knowledge of how to survive and avoid any potential danger from mushroom circles to even the clutches of red-eyed humans made him feel somewhat at ease.
Before he had grown to know any better and was faced with a life full of anxieties and worries over making the people he had loved proud, knowing with confidence how to survive in the forest and spending his time there always came as a great ease to Leonard as a child - All that could possibly have bested the feeling was that of being able to pass that knowledge to someone else.
12. What were their hobbies? Do they still have any of them?
Growing up, Leonard never took it upon himself to develop many hobbies outside of just simply trying to get by. Most days he spent his time in the shop, working and learning the ways of metal-smithing from his father until he was allowed to be taken by his friends to go play - Time that grew all the more sparse with his age when he became old enough to hunt. Still, Leonard frequently found himself falling behind his friends to be on his own in the forest, as dangerous as it was - Especially earlier on in his friendship. He enjoyed simply being able to lay down in the grass, collect small trinkets like acorns and mushrooms, and even fall right into a deep nap if he knew it was safe enough. Later on he would be caught by a particularly close friend of his, and for a time, the two merely lay and chatted about numerous things - What they wondered the rest of the world was like, different tales and gossip from the village, their future plans from what they'd do with their lives to their wives and children... Until eventually, one or both at a time had drifted off to sleep.
The habit had gradually thinned after making his first kill at the age of 12, and waned even further with the growing emotional turmoil that began to wrack him during his teenage years.
Even after leaving his village, Leonard had once again grown so caught up in the focus of just surviving that he had little time to rest during the day... Though there were times, whether he merely allowed himself the privilege for that day or did it solely to escape his own mind or hunger that he found certain places by the stream, particularly under the shade of a tree, made a perfect resting place.
