He watched her carefully, wondering why the regret did not weigh so heavily on him as he had thought. Perhaps because she’d joined willingly, perhaps because he was beginning to find peace with their purpose. Toni Stark had to know this was the only way, just as Steve had come to discover. It had to be why she’d followed him, why she’d agreed to join.

He couldn’t let himself feel otherwise. “Toni,” he called to her from the entrance to her cell. “I wanted to show you something.”

"Sinthea.” Steve stepped into the room towards Sin, his past quick and his expression sharp. Arms were crossed as he leaned in almost conspiratorially towards her, not giving much time for a greeting even as he halted. They were alone, but still he spoke almost silently. “The latest assignment. I wanted to speak with you on it. It’s important.”

He was hlding the mission in his hands, discreet in a small folder but obvious to a trained eye and certainly no less important.

He didn’t expect to see her, didn’t expect to be face to face with Peggy Carter again, but there she was, standing before him. Steve’s eyes were wide, shocked as he tried to take in that it was her, that of all the people he might have run into here at SHIELD, it had to be her.

“P-Peg,” he managed, but it was as though he was tiny again, chest tight and mind reeling. He couldn’t do this with her here, but he had to.

He had to, for Hydra.
