Academic grant competitions became ridiculous and insane.
Take this year postdoctoral fellowships in Marie Sklodowska Curie Actions, one of the biggest grant givers in EU. Even proposals which received the grade of 96.6% did not get the funding. So high was the competition!!
So you spend months writing your grant proposal, submit, get more than 95% points for quality of your research and still do not get it.
It's hard to keep the motivation in this setting. The grant applications more and more resemble a lottery.
