Quarantine has got me feeling all fucking kinds of things, ſo I've decided to bring back long S. It's my favourite letter.
I ſtrive for a world that uſes long S.
In the seminal and popular work A General History of the Pyrates, Captain Charles Johnson (a pseudonym) details the stories of over a dozen buccaneers. These stories would inspire later depictions of pirates in popular culture. Indeed, the book was rather popular with numerous printings. Our copy is the 2nd edition, published in 1724.
The top image is of Mary Read and Anne Bonny, two infamous female pirates of the Caribbean. The bottom one is of Bartholomew “Black Bart” Roberts.
Quick tip for those not familiar with older texts: you’ll often find a long s ſ that is an archaic form of the lowercase “s.” So if you’re not intereſted in talking like a pirate then at leaſt you can ſpell like a pyrate.
When you see a f in place of a s in old writing like beaft it's actually a long s (' ſ ') and should be pronounced as such
Me everytime: BEEFT
PSA:
how tf did the letter "Ss" generate a third form twice in it's history at 2 seperate completely unrelated times
I miſs the long s ſometimes. It had a nice ſubſtantive feel to it.
