since she was a child, across continents and in many different bedrooms, bea has had a tattered, fading poster of monument valley in utah on her wall. ( it was on the wall of her bedroom when she lived with elliot, and it’s on her bedroom wall in the rank house, though she frequently gets asked on twitter what’s supposed to be on it because it’s so worn now ). her father ( a lifelong bostonian with no knowledge of anything outside of massachusetts until he moved to washington dc to become a rabblerouser, and consequently met his future wife and started working at the washington post ) used to tell her stories about the sweeping cliffs and red sand and a time before it was all so fucked up, and the poster was his when he was younger, the only remainder, besides memory, of a trip he took with school friends who he later tragically lost. she grew up romanticising high places, perhaps because she spent so much time in them, but she’s never managed to make it to the tall place that stole a part of her father’s heart. bea was going to go with rhett. they made late night plans for hikes and tents and stargazing ( that’s another thing bea has never seen properly, the stars ), and were meant to go camping in the angeles national forest for a weekend in preparation. every plan they made fell apart, somehow. she contemplates letting the poster finally fall apart too.

she could never hate him, but she resented him and his vicious audacity. there was a time when she had liked people who dared, there were some she still did — her former roommate chief among them — but rhett kennedy, when he was daring, was dangerous. like a wild dog slipping its harness, a tiger slinking out of its enclosure. it was best he was unharmed and uncaged. for him. not for bea. she hated him for being so quick, so cruel, to pass his judgement and deliver his ultimatum without hesitating. if he had spent even a fraction of the time she had to think, he would see that all she had done was so he wouldn’t be hurt the way he had hurt her. what happened after, when she hung up, when she stopped answering knocks on her door and texts, was rhett’s fault and his fault alone. and he wanted to sit in his high castle and have the audacity to say, no, to type, that she wasn’t a decent person and he was. no. 

bea’s rage had long manifested in flashes, lighting up her features just for a moment, like a strike of lightning on a placid see. it lay in the way she clenched her jaw, and under a table, her fists, gaze unwavering on the diner’s door. she resented rhett for forcing her from her room: she certainly wasn’t going to meet him there, and she certainly wasn’t going to meet him anywhere else in the house, where they could be seen. he had compromised the last of her safe places. even though half the menu was unattainable, the shop made the sweetest waffles she’d ever tasted, and the line cooks knew how she liked them, slightly burnt, and butter was free. roscoe’s was open when she was writing at midnight. it was open for breakfast, and lunch, and dinner, and when she was suffering. it was a cure-all. and, according to rhett, it was authentic. and, most importantly, roscoe’s was hers.

the door swung open. it was colder outsider than bea remembered, but los angeles-cold. 

rhett might have come here after. without her. she certainly came here without him. but it had been so long since they were in this room, at one of these booths, together. she clenched her fists under the table, jaw clenched so tight it was already starting to ache. ‘ fuck you, you useless, stupid piece of shit, did you ever fucking stop to consider that i was trying to save your fucking dumb idiot waste of life ass ? ’ there. she had said it to herself, in all its arguable entirety. she knew what she wanted to say to him.

bea was furious. she resented him. she unclenched a fist and her jaw and picked up her fork.

“ i ordered what you used to get for you, so, if you want something else, get them to amend it yourself. ”

bea was alone in the kitchen. no camera men, no macbooks, no sayre or eva or whoever the hell else, just her and her bowl of five pm cereal. bea maintained honey nut cheerios were an all-day meal. ( it wasn’t like she had anything else in her pantry to eat either. ) she had maybe, ten, fifteen minutes of her solitude before she was interrupted, managing not to roll her eyes at rhett as he strode in. 

“ if you want some, don’t just make eyes at my cheerios, rhett. ” bea held the spoon out to him for only a moment before she withdrew it. “ get your own, boy. plenty to share, i guess. ”
