Sumin doesn’t know what was most surprising: Juwon sitting at the edge of her bed, staring at her with a smile on his lips, or the way her heart beat fast against her rib cage, this time not because of the usual nightmare but rather something else. Something she couldn’t explain.
“You really don’t have to, you know?”
There are still beads of sweat on her forehead and she wonders how he can look at her and smile when she looks that miserable. Stress is obvious on her features, tiredness evident in the grey bangs under her eyes, light but still there. She was a mess and she was aware of it. Perhaps it hadn’t been the best idea to overwork herself but she had needed a distraction. When he hadn’t appeared at the coffee shop, Sumin had nothing else to distract her mind from the constant nightmare that haunted her every night and kept her awake in the darkness of her room at night.
The dark hadn’t been that terrifying since she had been a child.
How had Juwon decided it was alright to put up with her in that state? She wasn’t even sure she wanted to know the answer. At least for that moment, she wanted to enjoy how warm it was to have him so close (yet he was so far away still).
(Just come closer... I might look strong but I’m fragile and I need you closer.)
“I’m alright. It was just a nightmare.” Her smile wavers and for a moment her eyes show a certain fear in them. But she wasn’t alone and everything seemed better because of that. She felt... safer?
“But hey... if you’re staying...” Somehow, she finds enough strength to master a wider smile, almost playful, eyes focusing on his yet again, the lights from the street outside, ascending from the small window by her bed, brighten up her features, accentuating the flaws that her mother used to say made her even more special, more beautiful in her own way. She wasn’t sure if she believed her. Not yet. “You could read me a story.”
(Tell me the story of the boy that visited the coffee shop every day despite not liking coffee all that much. Tell me how it ends for the girl that smiled at him and only him.)
(Tell me it ends with a happy ever after.)
She hadn’t gotten one of those in a while.
