they thought of his mask as wrath’s incarnate — but truly, it was a mask and simply that. hiding any defining features, revealing only the black monstrosity beneath his left eye. he was not kaneki ken in this mask; he was the CENTIPEDE, slithering watcher in the night, tongue aching in the wake of waiting meals. but the mask didn’t equate anger. surprisingly enough, as he wears the mask tonight, the mouth drawn with petrifying details, he feels completely apathetic to his surroundings. the scratch of soles on city streets are just a whisper in his ear, something he makes note of but makes no effort to concentrate on. the night takes form in the landscape of his dreams, resting on his dead eyes and the obvious lack of sleep.

but aside from the unamused calm on his face, the silence that sits in his every muscle, kaneki’s tracking a scent. unlike humans and unlike ghouls, but still capable of being found. he’s not even hiding himself as he shifts between rooftops, too preoccupied with the curiosity than with the danger.
