38. things you said while holding my hand
“Are you sure you don’t want to stick around in there? It is your birthday they’re celebrating back there ...” Though, there is no hiding the relief found in the evening air. Flushed cheeks burn as the heart flutters at the sight of him. His subtle smile. The way his eyes glow beneath the moonlight. The soft tinge staining his features after a few celebratory drinks. Compared to the energy inside, the silence is a welcomed reprieve. After all, time alone with Alaric was few and in-between now that preparations were underway for their next assignment. Alaric needed this night more than anyone. Day in and day out, Valerie watched him run over every bit of information. His eyes constant in reviewing all their tools to ensure that they were safe and knowledgeable of what could happen. His dedication to his friends and people a consistent trait that often left the woman in admiration.
In the silence, they are allowed to steal this moment for themselves. Their hands gravitating until digits lace. He fits like the missing puzzle piece against her. The warmth radiating off him a familiar sensation as it stole her breath for just a moment. Should she tell him tonight? It wasn’t as though anyone would come up to interrupt them ... and it seemed like the perfect opportunity. “...” But not a syllable manages to fall as their eyes meet. This moment is too fragile for words to be used. To risky to break ... and yet, there is something that pulls her in. An unseen force drawing her closer until tiers softly brush against his. His hand still intertwined with her as lashes kiss her cheek when sight ceases. It is a tender caress. A fraction of her quiet affection despite her racing heart within its cage. If he suddenly rejected her advance, Valerie had the excuse of blaming the alcohol at least.
“Happy birthday, Alaric...”
‘ Next time ’, she silently tells herself. Perhaps then she will find the courage to finally tell him ... but for now, there is this moment to enjoy.
