Doodles (full under cut)
There's a soft, fond look a younger Dean had only for Sam, his baby brother. A look for when Dean was proud of him, or would indulge his childish rambling about unimportant things. His smile would change depending on the circumstances, but his eyes always had that soft fondness, all of Dean's attention narrowed down to just Sam.
There was a similar look when Dean would flirt with cheerleaders or waitresses, and a part of Sam resented it. But it was never quite the same, and eventually Sam got over it. Even when John eventually put his foot down about how close they always were, Dean would still look at him with those same soft eyes. In the side or rearview, across a motel room, never too far.
Sam never knew exactly what changed. He'd deny to hell and back it was part of the Stanford decision. It wasn't the whole or even a large part, just one small thorn he'd never admit bothered him.
At some point Sam stopped being Dean's smaller little brother, and Dean stopped looking at him with that soft, fond expression. Maybe it was an acknowledgement of Sam growing up, and maybe Sam shouldn't be upset by it. He'd never mention it one way or the other— though mostly because if he ever did Dean really never would look at him like that again.
But Dean did, having shown up at Sam's school. Sam felt the look before he saw it. Sam could always feel Dean looking at him. He'd been out with some classmates for dinner and across the road, there had been Dean. And when Sam looked, there it was. That soft, fond look. To Sam's credit, he didn't bolt into Dean's arms like he might have as a child, but god he'd wanted to.

Proof that if they had named the ships HMS Cheerful and HMS Calmness, they would have survived, no problem 👍
