❝ not all good people are innocent. ❞

“No, they’re–” Noctis felt a little dryness at the back of his throat when he swallowed, gaze dropping for just a moment. Good people. Good… people…
Maybe innocence and being a good person had nothing to do with one another. It’d been a thought he’d considered, then pushed away. Every time. His father–
Hadn’t he been a good person? Noctis always thought so. Busy, sure, but warm. A warm father. A good king. But innocent… no. No, not by a long shot. All those people. All of those innocent people, just… Sacrificed.
For him. For the sake of the world, maybe, but–
How many classmates? How many apartment neighbors? What about Prompto’s family? Iggy’s? He knew what happened to Gladio’s, and maybe that was their duty or whatever–
Swallowing again, making a concerted effort to evenly meet the gaze leveled at him, he nodded slightly. He tried to think of his… his station. His duty. Things he truly hoped he could use to try and right wrongs of the past. If that were possible. If he could even identify them all.
“They’re not. Of course they’re not. All we can do is try to realize our mistakes, take responsibility to fix what we can, and do our best to never repeat them.”
A king’s words and a fool’s heart, probably. Still, he’d rather it that way.
