Tulmblr showed me a thing and now I can’t stop thinking about Simon “I just want to live, doesn’t everybody want that” the Convict and Ryland “But I don’t want to die” Grace!

And about how they were both forced to go out on a suicide mission which they didn’t volunteer for. How despite that they both desperately wanted for ways to help humanity even before their respective missions (Grace with teaching his kids and Simon with his rather….. unique way of making dirt). How they were closed into a metal ship and sent farther than any other human has ever been to a place where communication with the rest of humanity would be impossible and where they were expected to be alone. How the stars in both their world were dying, how they were both asked to find an impossible solution to an unexplainable phenomenon. How they both met an alien life form which was crucial for their understanding of what was happening despite the existence of alien life that far away being thought of as impossible. How they both faced their worst fears and overcame themselves for a chance to save humanity- humanity they will never see again, because this was always a one way trip this was always going to end in death. How they fought to save humanity regardless, even if that same humanity was exactly what got them into their respective problems in the first place. About how they were both betrayed by people they trusted. About how all that humanity will ever have from them is a small drive with information with which to save themselves. And how the SM-13 had a life vest even though Simon was welded inside of it. And how the Hail Mary had all of human knowledge including games and movies and stories and software. How people sent a lone sacrificial lamb out there to go save them all but how the idea of doing it without giving them the best chance at success or potential survival never even occurred to them.

I’m thinking also about how the only reason Grace did survive and Simon did not was because the alien Grace met was kinder than the one that Simon met. How despite everything, the universe was kinder to Grace than it ever was to Simon in giving him time to notice the stars dimming, find a way to fix it and then giving him a friend to work alongside him. And about how Grace got a giant clear window to watch the stars from (a constant reminder of why his sacrifice is worth it even if he refused to volunteer for it) , while all Simon got was a small dirty piece of glass covered in blood (a constant reminder of his crimes) which was eventually closed off entirely.
