Oh My God - (G)I-DLE
**This post is not about the band or the company they belong to. This is only about this one song.
So, I’ve said in the past that I kind of have a problem with the girl K-pop bands for several reasons (infantilising them, fetishizing them, over sexualizing them, objectifying them etc.).
Saying that, there are a few girl bands that do stand out, that feel more independent, write their own lyrics, feel different than that set mold (which would be truer, I think, with the older generation bands). One of them would be Mamamoo, for instance (they deserve a whole post for themselves, which maybe one day I will write. They are all very special, but Hwasa, she’s on another level. Her bravery, her boldness).
So, with that whole introduction, I came by (G)I-DLE’s Oh My God, and it kind of knocked me off my feet. I didn’t expect that, especially not with my pre-determined ideas of K-pop girl bands (which I admit I am going to start and re-evaluate, especially the newer generation bands, the ones that are given more freedom of expression and creativity).
Knowing the conservative SK society this was a very bold release, so much more so coming from a girl band. There is nothing happy or cutesy about this song. It’s dark, it’s sinful, it’s meaningful and sending a message to those that are willing to listen to it.
[Intro: Minnie] Nothing can pull me away from your embrace I'm not going anywhere Here we go again, I hear the sound of pain Flowing slowly through my veins Oh God [Verse 1: Soyeon] Help me, help me Oh, I don't know how to breathe (Don't know how to breathe), for real Set free, set free This craving is gonna be (Almost gonna be), deadly [Pre-chorus: Yuqi, Miyeon] I know that you're only playin' I hate it so much I love it What would be the repercussions if I let you inside me? It's so dangerous I want it Guess you got me where you want me I don't care that I'm addicted [Chorus: Soyeon, Minnie] Oh my God (Oh, God) She took me to the sky (Sky, sky, sky) Oh my God (Oh, God) She showed me all the stars (Stars, stars, stars)
Verse 2: Soojin] Baby, baby You got me losing my mind tonight (I'm losing my mind) Toxic, toxic I tell my friends that I'm fine, it's a lie (I'm doing real fine) [Verse 3: Soyeon] Oh God, I should stay away But then you will hit me up and I am on my way Can't stop, girl, you make me sick But then you make me wanna stick around I know I got it bad It feels good, yeah, I'll regret it You're detrimental to my health but I ain't never leavin' (Yeah, yeah) I'm probably crazy but I need it, want it, gotta have it You may be poison, but sure as hell taste like honey [Pre-chorus: Miyeon, Yuqi] Losing all my senses when you pull me close I don't know how to let go of this passion So just burn me with your loving I can't control this desire We get close, the flames get higher Nothing can put out this fire [Chorus: Soojin, Minnie] Oh my God (Oh, God) She took me to the sky (Sky, sky, sky) Oh my God (Oh, God) She showed me all the stars (Stars, stars, stars)
[Bridge: Shuhua] Put your hands all over, want your smell on me forever I'm losing my composure, can't nobody do me better Time and time again, I told myself I need to let go Then I fall right back into your arms [Chorus: Soyeon, Soojin] Oh my God (Oh, God) She took me to the sky (Sky, sky, sky) Oh my God (Oh, God) She showed me all the stars (Stars, stars, stars) [Outro: Minnie] Nothing can pull me away from your embrace I'm not going anywhere Here we go again, I hear the sound of pain Flowing slowly through my veins
Whichever way you look at this song, it’s bold and big and loud and brave.
Reading the lyrics there are really no words needed to explain what it’s all about. But if there was some doubt that maybe it isn’t what it looks like, well Soyeon, who wrote the lyrics to the song had to say this when asked about the “she” referred to in the lyrics:
“I believe that all kinds of love are valuable and must be respected. That's why I don't want to limit 'she' to something specific."
I don’t know much about the band or the company they are part of. I have read that one of the members had to leave due to claims of bullying and at the moment there is kind of uncertainty about the band (the company has just notified that they won’t be releasing season greetings this year). I will probably go digging for some more information about them (time allowing), but this song, well to me it feels like one more step forward.
A step forward for girl bands allowing creativity, allowing them to be seen as grown real life women with thoughts and feelings and even lust, god forbid. Allowing them to be heard. Allowing them to voice another kind of love, one that many would say is forbidden. And here they are singing it out loud and proud.
