James was trying really hard not to be completely enamoured by the tiny puppy running around the garden, but it was extremely difficult, especially when James could see how excited Harry was. However, one look at his husband’s face was enough to stop him from smiling too broadly.
“Sirius, a word.” Regulus gritted out.
“Sorry, Reggie, I’m needed out here.” Sirius danced away from his younger brother, with a shit eating grin on his face.
“I’m going to kill him.” Regulus continued to grit through his teeth. “What the hell were they thinking, getting him a puppy? As if it isn’t us that’s going to end up taking care of it.”
“I know, Love.” James rubbed a soothing hand down Regulus’ spine. “But look how happy Harry is and between us,” Regulus turned to glare at James. “And by us, I mean me and Harry,” James quickly course corrected. “We’ll get that little terror trained and he’ll be your best friend in no time.”
Regulus heaved a heavy sigh. “Fine. But the first time it chews any of the furniture or does its business inside the house, or digs up my garden, it goes to live with those two idiots. Now, I’m going to go back inside to calm down and get ready for our guests, who should be arriving soon.”
James nodded and Regulus walked back inside, mumbling to himself about different ways to get away with fratricide.
All the noise and commotion outside had drawn James’ parents into the garden and James watched as Monty made a beeline for the puppy, but Effie stopped at James’ side.
“Oh dear.” She sighed with a slightly amused hum. “I take it this is why Regulus looks so annoyed?”
“Yeah, he’s ever so slightly less than happy that Sirius and Remus did this without consulting us first.”
“Hmm.” Effie put her hands on her hips and called her, errant honorary sons over. “Sirius. Remus. Come here, please.” A firm demand, not a gentle request.
Sirius’ face dropped and he walked over to Effie shuffling his feet and looking like he knew how much trouble he was about to be in. Sirius might not be afraid of Regulus, but he sure was terrified of his mum.
“Yes, mum?” Sirius tried to put on an air of innocence.
Remus was practically hiding behind his husband, hoping to avoid being seen. Given he was a foot taller he was doing a terrible job.
“Did you two really buy that puppy for Harry without speaking to James and Regulus first?” Neither of them moved or spoke right away. “Boys.”
“Yes, mum.” “Yes, Effie.” They replied at the same time, looking thoroughly chastised from the so far small telling off.
“That was extremely irresponsible of you both and you owe them an apology.”
“But muuuuum,” Sirius drawled. “Look how cute he is and how happy Harry is!” Sirius pointed at the pair behind them and James had to agree it was a beautiful sight, even if it was beside the point.
“Sirius Lupin-Black, if you do not go inside and apologise to your brother on your own accord, I will drag you in there by your ear, do you understand me?”
The threat made even James balk and Sirius covered his ears with his hands.
“I’m going, I’m going!” Sirius practically ran into the house. Remus followed a split second later when Effie shot him a you too, look.
James couldn’t help the laugh that escaped him.
“You boys, always causing me problems.” Effie shook her head and wandered over to where Harry was now sitting cross legged in the grass, rubbing his puppy’s belly and merrily chatting away to his Grandpa.
James contemplated going back into the house but decided he would rather stay out of that fight and instead, also went to meet the latest addition to his household.
“Hey, bud.”
“Daddy, look!” Harry gestured at the puppy rolling around in front of him. “He’s got a green ribbon!”
“I see that, mate.” James sat down on the grass with Harry and his puppy.
Sensing a new person to dote on it, the puppy jumped into James’ lap and began nuzzling into James’ chest and arms.
“Hello, new friend.” James scratched it’s ears. Damn it was a really cute puppy. “Do you have a name yet?”
“Daddy,” Harry giggled. “He can’t speak, he’s a puppy.”
“Oh yes, silly me. Well, Harry, does your new friend have a name?”
Harry chewed his cheek as he thought hard. “Urm, no, not yet. I want it to be a really good one.”
“Very wise, sweetheart.” Effie beamed at her grandson.
Harry, basking in the glow of his family’s admiration and getting a freaking puppy for his birthday, got to his feet and ran off again, encouraging his pup to chase him.
It wasn’t long before Regulus was calling Harry’s name and when Harry, James, Effie and Monty turned around, it was to see a gaggle of children running into the garden from the kitchen and Harry started to squeal in delight.
