What do you think would have happened to Ilya if he got outed early in his career, like prior to winning the cup?
On the Russian front, even if it happened before the 2013 law, I think he wouldn't have been invited to participate in the Olympics. I don't know if he would have been able to go home even that early in canon.
Do you think the NHL might have dropped his contract since he wasn't yet an established captain with a cup to his name? Would he have been stuck virtually stateless (no job in the usa, no work visa/unable to go back home)?
mmm, i don't think i'm super qualified to speak at length on the legal ramifications of it, but i can safely say it would be much more than "you can't go home/can't be in the olympics". like sure, in 2013, the "anti-gay" law got passed, but this is not an out-of-nowhere-attitude change.
and ilya, particularly would have already been the subject of far heightened scrutiny/kreml*n pressure in russia given:
1. he lived in moscow + prominent political attitude towards moscow's vibrant queer comm in the 2000s 2. his proximity and exposure to "western" culture + kreml*n youth/culture oriented legislation already in place 3. his prominence as a russian hockey player specifically representing his country on an international stage 4. his father/brother's proximity to the kreml*n enforcement
so i'd defer to those more knowledgeable in the russian sociopolitical sphere (beloved ki), but bc of the intensity of the scrutiny, you're looking at genuine violent threat to self from the state and from the family. eligible for asylum status potentially if he can prove a significant bodily threat to HIM specifically, but that's a big burden of proof. also an EB-1A in the US hinges on proving that you are an extraordinary athlete internationally and have achieved SUSTAINED national/international success. if this happens early in his career, it's up for doubt whether he can prove that.
also, if he's in the US on a P-1A work visa that is tied to his employer is not known actually. we assume he is. but, i'm not sure if the mlh would have dropped him, it's unclear to what extent they mimic the nhl. obvs no one has come out in the nhl, but 25 years ago there was a guy that almost did and within the last 5-10 years there was another guy. they both backed down at the last second, but they felt supported enough to begin the process of coming out of their own accord, which can be cited as some modicum of evidence that there are some teams where some players would have felt they could.
so there's some sense that the raiders wouldn't have abandoned his contract. amplified by the fact that the raiders in the first seasons with ilya go to playoffs and go further than the metros go with shane. therefore, the upswing from #1 draft pick to playoff contention was wicked, unreasonably fast. and ilya, as mentioned by many good scholars, fits the style and dynamic of a boston team really really well. he's a cash cow for them. and i think that would hesitate to terminate after a forced outing specifically also bc ilya himself didn't go to the press. but it would definitely affect his contract signing after ELC bc they know he is in a bind, etc. (there are russian players in the nhl that have excommunicated btw).
i could potentially see it easier to ask for a trade to a canadian team and apply for asylum there, if he is not EB-1A qualified. again, tricky for his contract. could be fun to explore narratively from a: get hollanov on the same team perspective though
counterpoint: GC canon does not in-depth address the reality of racism/xenophobia/hazing structure/misogyny/etc. both as a result of adherence to genre norms and creator choices. so it's hard to know how deep the homophobia goes, too, tbh, and what laws do or don't exist there. carter vaughn casually mentions in a sochi cafe that an athlete might be gay and follows it up with, it's not safe here for that. but he felt it was safe enough to out this person in public with speculation?? and the canon never makes anything of it aside from shane's POV worry abt ilya in response to it. because HR is told as hollanov's memory, it's unreliable abt what is emotion vs what is fact.
years down the road, after the 2013 law would have passed, if it exists, ilya says 'i would never be able to go home' and is terrified, but doesn't know what would happen to him, which implies something bad but not specifically codified perhaps. so despite shane's and ilya's anxieties being a prominent plot point, it remains unclear what the Real World Ramifications of Being Outed Are. perhaps some of the things i listed from the real world do not exist there.
so in conclusion: i'm not sure! nothing good! kdjnbkjn

hello hello hello 🎀 it has once again come to my attention that I can post whatever I want, but also I'm vomiting and shitting at the idea of posting something cringe but then I realize I've shared so little information that no one knows me and I don't have to worry about people judging me because they don't even know who I am
Mpreg post where I talk about As Nodt and his baby. Warning for doodle blood and a somber postpartum scene/description
