Can I just be real and say that it’s not fun being in the Narnia fandom anymore? I don’t care that it’s because we’ve grown, I think it’s great that we’re growing as a fandom on tumblr! We used to be so small, consisting of maybe two or three dozen active Narnia blogs and now we’re so much bigger. But honestly, with fandom growth comes blogs that aren’t so friendly and really this Netflix news hasn’t helped out the situation.
Ever since the Netflix news, I’ve seen people already begin to gatekeep and people hating on and disrespecting each other. People are already hating on the new adaption which is really upsetting people that are actually excited and lookin forward to the new adaptation.
And that’s just the stuff specifically Netflix news related. I’ve also seen a lot of thinly veiled homophobia and racism which, you can believe whatever you want about the LGBT+ community, but that’s still no excuse for hatred and bigotry. And racism isn’t some controversial topic either where we can have opinions about whether they “go against our religions” or not, it’s an issue that’s real and has been ongoing for centuries and it’s disgusting to see people excuse it or exhibit racist behaviors and beliefs.
I’m not here to give some big tangent about how these are the reasons why I’m leaving the fandom or anything. This is a call out post to all those people that have made being in the Narnia fandom like being in any other big and controversial fandom. Stop it. Stop the bigotry. Stop the hatred. Stop the gatekeeping. I’m seeing complaints about people not wanting “new” fans that “don’t understand” the books to come in and ruin the fandom yet those of us that are already in the fandom that “understand” the books are the ones ruining the fandom. Just stop and chill out. Yes, state your opinions, I’m one of the first to do so very openly and very vocally. But seriously, be considerate of other people.
Don’t be a pre-VODT Eustace, or a pre-LWW Edmund for that matter.
