War was never something anyone wanted, especially those of his tribe. Daniel was a mediator, a peacekeeper, and the blood that had been spilled weighed heavily on his soul. He knew the truth of what happened to his father – that he’d been killed protecting one of his tribe’s sacred spaces – but to the rest of the world, he’d simply vanished. Others too. Enough that it had garnered the attention of the local authorities – and reporters sniffing around for a story.
He was an entertainment journalist, often conducting interviews with celebrities or writing up articles on local businesses that pertained to the arts, but there were others – those that wanted the hard-hitting stories – that he had to be wary of when speaking. If proof was found that werewolves existed, that a whole world existed right under the humans’ noses, then it would bring ruin to their kind. A war against each other was one thing, but a war against humanity would be unthinkable.
Grace was one of those that made Daniel uneasy. Not because she was a bad person, not even in the slightest, but because she was smart. Smart was dangerous when poking around into the business of werewolves, and he had been tasked with steering her in another direction. It wasn’t going to be as easy as those in his tribe – his pack – seemed to believe.
“Grace!” Bright smile lit his face as he placed a cup of coffee down onto her desk and took a seat in the empty cubicle next to hers. “So, I have to ride out to Sunset Park today for an interview with a gallery owner there. They’re doing a show on young Chinese-American artists, mostly kids and young adults. I was thinking I might stop by my parents’ restaurant and catch some lunch. You know, just to check in on my mom…” She was having a rough time after his father’s ‘disappearance,’ so Daniel made it a regular thing to check in on her and his sisters.
And that sense of normalcy? Maybe it would show Grace that things were moving along as they should.
“What do you say? My mom makes the best food in New York…you won’t regret it.”
