“I’m sorry, I’ve been a bit... out of sorts lately. Trying to get in as many valuable hours of work for... some reason or the other.” It was no excuse, of course, to put off meeting who was his best friend for a longer period of time than some casual greetings, but Jake was also very familiar with the way in which Robin could lose himself sometimes. Becoming so abstract into his own mind or his job that... he forgot anything else existed out there. Not that he had a lot of that going on, in any case, but for the few and far between friends he could count on.
It wasn’t some type of seasonal disorder, that much he was certain of, but rather the inevitability of life -- of time passing, of things changing... of one of his lifelong best friends being father to a toddler while his own daughter was well on her way to having her own children. Not that he particularly envied either one, it was just... a reminder of how fast things could change. “As an apology for neglecting you, it’s my treat today. Wherever we might end up. Don’t be afraid of robbing me blind, Jake, you deserve more than that.”
