Chapter 25: Christmas Eve

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse[.]

“Daddy?” said Beth.

“It’s me.”

She smiled, in the dream, and it felt like beams of light were shooting out of her face. It was warm, and she lit the whole sky, but also, it was snowing. The forest around her, it was all white. “What are you doin here? Who was inside that cabin with you before?”

“Daryl,” he said. He wore his wise suspenders, and his white hair tied off his face. He was picking his teeth with a toothpick. “We were just talking, over dinner."

"Where's Daryl now?"

“Now? Well you should know that, Bethy. He’s your husband.”

“Not yet. I mean, I don’t know where he is.”

The dream world sang little songs, birds in the snowy trees surrounding them. In front of them, the river bubbled up to the snowy banks. There were no walkers. Beth knew that this was a dream, because there should have been walkers. Even in Eden, there are always walkers. The afternoon can put its spell on you, but you’re never alone in the land of the dead.

Chapter 23: The Town Hall

When they got to the Town Hall in Falls Church, it looked mostly abandoned. There were green flowering vines growing like crazy all up the walls and along the fences. It seemed unusual, to have vines in such flourish, so close to the winter season. It was early in the morning, so you could still see a couple of bright stars in the sky, and you could see your breath. In the parking lot, there were a couple of guards asleep on top of woolen sleeping bags next to a dying fire. Next to them was an old powder blue Ford Bronco, stripped to its studs and hollowed out into a kind of flower box. Growing inside of it were what appeared to be root vegetables, like the green tops of potato plants, maybe parsnips, or carrots, or gourds. Daryl didn’t much know the difference, but he knew it was something, and he admired the ingenuity. It looked like these guys probably lived here, and they were probably Saviors. He could tell from the artillery leaning against the Bronco.

Chapter 22: The Paper Mill

Once Beth had visited the northern Rockies of Montana with her family, a place called the Paradise Valley. It was spring, and the Yellowstone River was high, and the tall cottonwoods would shed their little seed pods which looked like tiny spinal cords. They had rented out a train car that had been outfitted to a regular Bed and Breakfast, and you could hear the river rushing in the night, and in the mornings, she would go out and take a walk through the woods and find the little seed pods and she remembered thinking this was bizarre and otherworldly, like it was raining bones.
