So sad to overhear a dad who coaches a local team say “if their family can’t afford it, then their kid shouldn’t play” because it was too much effort to organize fundraisers for the team.

Being a coach for a children’s team is more than just coaching during practice. It’s a community service. You help children develop the skills and talents they will have for the rest of their life. If you want to just coach, go someplace where it’s a job with actual pay.

Do not volunteer to coach and forget that it’s volunteering. Sports are a valuable resource. It provides children who may have nothing else a community, a support system, an outlet and a release, a way to cultivate their dedication and persistence, and an avenue that teaches how to cope with failure and foster improvement.

And to the best of our ability that should not be limited to those who can pay. Poor kids deserve to play sports. Community sports should not be a privilege.

As someone from a family heavily involved in local community sports, I won’t stand for it.
