Edgar knew he didn’t have much time. That didn’t matter. 

The air felt like sandpaper and it burned whatever bit of skin was exposed as it rushed over them, but he didn’t care.

Even the ground below was hot and crumpled underfoot, the fires below billowing through cracks like a furnace.

“Father?” the child whimpered, clinging to him in fright. He could hardly blame him. Hell was no place for an innocent.

“I told you, you can call me Edgar,” he said softly.

“Right. Edgar. Are we going home now?” Edgar felt his throat tighten, but he nodded. No need to frighten him with their odds of survival.

“Of course. I’m getting you out of here.”

“And, we’re going out for ice cream cones, right?” Edgar chuckled as he lifted Todd up into his arms. He held him close as his wings blocked the worst of the wind and fire.

“Absolutely. I promised, didn’t I?”
