GOLDEN KAMUY, Season 3, Episode 8 Manslayer, “人斬り”
i don't even remember how the prev gk sesson ended but vasily's subtitle calling ogata "my wildcat" is sooo
on second film z watch and per the other day's ramblings we're led to agree with the marine (this is a sengoku line) that yes z's trauma is sympathetic BUT we draw the line at civilian casualties, e.g. the marine are moderate, but the audience of golden kamuy is free to think whatever they want of the central government that tsurumi defies/ogata serves based on history. one could ostensibly enjoy it as a a japanese nationalist, enjoyment for certainly misplaced focus but enjoyment nonetheless
do i think gk is anti-imperialist? it's certainly critical of cultural hegemony threatening the ainu, but really stops there; we just get contemporary self-justification that predates the empire's further expansion, and veterans of the russo-japanese war like sugimoto and the hokkaido 7th division don't see beyond siberia and manchuria. there is no winking judgment that "and these people are racist," it just presents their beliefs
but as far as op marine factions go, the story points us toward garp, smoker, tashigi, and SWORD as proof the institution is diverse, maybe even capable of reform. and i just love historical fiction from the perspective of the doomed, and nothing about op tells me the marine will die even if somehow uncoupled from the world government
okay so z and tsurumi have the same VA
