This made my eyes water writing this. Terry deliberately burned a gift beloved’s father gave her. 10 Days later, her father died. Beloved is now avoiding Terry to the max (I wanna know what Terry does when beloved literally avoids eye contact with him, goes into a different room, and ignores his texts) Terry KNOWS what he did was wrong. Beloved finally tells him “you hurt me in the worst way possible. I’m not happy” Terry let’s that sink in. He better feel goddamn awful
Commissions an identical replica of whatever it is he destroyed.
Terry has a profound (borderline morbid) understanding of commemorating the dead, I think. Well, I know. His years and years and years of wearing his ponytail is proof of that. He, in his own weird sense, remembers, usurps and takes the deceased that matter to him and those he feels responsible for unto himself, practically becoming them (or at least fragments of them), as such, he attempts to re-create what he mangled. Of course, it will never be the same, but Ponytail wasn't the same either when Terry became bits and pieces of him, collecting him like a trophy. He was a hybrid, hijacked mask. Regardless, Terry leaves the new present where beloved will find it and he says nothing of it in this time of grieving, because believe it or not, he cares a little too much what is thought of him by those he loves. It is a solemn, quiet exchange and he hopes they understand that he wants to fix what he's damaged because he is devoted to the teeth. Undoubtedly organizes and pays for beloved's father's entire funeral and all the expenses that come with it too because he wouldn’t let anyone take that from him. He does feel awful. More than you can comperhend. His time as Twig comes flashing back. He felt guilty for Ponytail's death all his life and now he feels guilty for yet another death. He isn't superstitious, but it is almost like destroying that present was an interlude to beloved's father dying. Maybe he really is to blame for literally everything, always. Terry spirals and he takes this dark event possibly with as much difficulty as beloved does in certain ways.
