i proofread all my stuff by reading it out loud to my mother, and when that scene passed the laugh test with her, i knew i should keep it in. my other editing rubric for death and orchids - specifically the story-within-a-story parts - was “if it makes me laugh or groan, keep it in, it’s working.”
i grew up in an upper-middle-class neighborhood, so let’s just say i’m seeing some, uh, unusual baby name choices on facebook as my old classmates and i get into our mid- and late-twenties LOL
