Background: Hunter decides to do a dance cover to one of his favorite tracks of 2017
Hunter’s choice to do the choreography to a song that was sung by a female idol was something that took him a while to actually come to the conclusion of doing. For the first several years of his life he had done things that were always meant for girls. Played with dolls, played house, played with other girls. Instead of running around outside and getting dirty with all the other guys at school, he became every girls’ guy best friend. And that didn’t bother him for the longest time until people began to shame him for it.
So after a while, he became subconscious of every decision he made. He tried not to be too feminine. He tried not to do things that were seen as girly or effeminate. Not because he thought it was wrong, but because other people thought it was wrong. He’d seen how other male idols were made fun of for knowing girl group dances like the back of their hands, and while the jokes were more often than not made in all good fun and laughs, he couldn’t help but flashback to those memories of those other little boys making fun of him because he would rather pick up a doll than a football.
He’d spent years trying to stifle and hide that part of himself, for fear of being made fun of or judged. It was all for nought though, of course. He’d seen other male idols embrace their femininity and still be successful. Don was one of them. He was completely unapologetic about who he was and how he acted, something that Hunter respected and wanted for himself. He wanted to be like the older male. Even though he debuted first, Don was still his hyung. They had trained together for years, and Hunter held a lot of respect for him.
Which was why he was able to convince him to go through with the dance cover for the Cover Festival.
“It’s just a dance, Hunter. If you want to do it, do it. Since when did dance moves have a specific gender?”
He was right about that.
When Hunter approached his manager and told him what he wanted to do, he was met with raised eyebrows and a surprised look, but not with a no, so he took that as his permission to go along with it. Despite his earlier skepticism of doing the dance, he couldn’t help but feel excited as he made his way down to the practice room where all the cameras would be set up. Not only was it going to be fun, but it was going to allow all of Alien’s fans to see a new side of him that they never had before. They saw the Hunter who was the main dancer of Alien, the one who could do the tough and masculine moves given to them. Now they would be able to see a softer side of him, and hopefully they’d like it just as much.
He entered the room and was happy to see that there weren’t that many people there - just Alien’s manager and two cameramen. He shrugged out of his hoodie and hung it up on the hook by the door, bowing in the direction of the men in the room, before taking his place in the center on his knees. He took a deep breath, before glancing at his manager and nodding. A few seconds later, music began pouring through the speakers and he began dancing.
It was surprising how quickly he was able to lose himself in the song, but that only showed how comfortable he was dancing to it. The beat was addictive, as were the lyrics, and whoever choreographed the dance to the song was a genius. The incorporated the perfect balance of subtlety and power, and it made the easy to the eye dance moves much more difficult than they seemed, but he did a pretty damn good job of keeping up.
By the time the music ended and he was in the final ending pose, Hunter was upset that it was over. He’d had so much fun doing it that when it came to a close, all he wanted to do was do it all over again. He bowed slightly at the half hearted applause his manager and the cameramen gave him.
“You did good, kid. Go get some rest, okay? You boys have a music show filming tomorrow, and we don’t need you passing out on stage from exhaustion.” His manager patted him on the back, and he smiled at him, nodding his head. “Yes, hyung. Goodnight.”
He quickly made his way to the exit, grabbing his hoodie on his way out, hope blooming in his chest as he thought of the possible positive reactions he would receive from his cover. Focus on the positive, not the negative. Don’s words rang throughout his head, and he would try his best to heed them.
