Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes was an American singer, rapper, and songwriter most known for her role in iconic girl group TLC. She was the group’s main rapper and most frequent songwriter, penning her own verses, and was responsible for coming up with the group’s professional nicknames: Left Eye, Chilli, and T-Boz. She always claimed that her nickname came from mocking “a guy’s bad pickup line”–that he was attracted to her left eye. Left Eye had a troubled and dysfunctional life both personally and professionally, beginning in her early childhood in an abusive home with alcoholic parents. In her adulthood, she was placed in a halfway house for alcoholism after being charged with arson when she accidentally burned down the home she shared with her abusive boyfriend. However, after treatment, she adopted two children and died while in the process of setting up an 80-acre educational youth center in Honduras. She died in 2002 at the age of 30 in La Ceiba, Honduras, when she was thrown from her rental vehicle. A documentary called The Last Days of Left Eye chronicles her final trip to Honduras.
