the thing adaptations chronically misunderstand is that mina is the protagonist of dracula. she's the linchpin on which the whole plot hangs. without her, the heroes fail, the narrative collapses -- she's the one who curates the entire endeavor. but people* want dracula to be the protagonist, and so goes mina's interiority/agency, out the window.
