THE MANDALORIAN ‣ 1.01
Discussion of pop culture online has gotten so annoying, because there are even people on the conservative/“anti-woke” side who will just pile on a movie they haven’t even seen based on accusations that aren’t actually true.
Like I remember when Solo: A Star Wars Story was coming out, and a bunch of the “anti-woke” crowd were calling the film “Soylo” and insisting the movie would have SJW propaganda when…it turned out to not really have any of that in it? People got mad about Reva in the Kenobi show being “woke” when her character, again, didn’t really have or say or do anything “woke” apart from the fact that she was played by a black actress. The story would have been the exact same had Reva been played by a white guy.
Now people are going after the new Indiana Jones movie for reasons that aren’t even true? Like insisting Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s character snarks at Indy for “stealing from indigenous people” (turns out that line isn’t even said in the actual scene if you watch it on YouTube), spreading fake leaks about how PWB’s character goes back in time and takes Indy’s place after he gets killed off to bring in a new franchise with a ~female Indiana Jones~ (not even remotely close to how the actual movie apparently ends), etc. Meanwhile people who saw the movie are saying her character is a quippy female sidekick like Indy has in other movies, the difference being that she’s his goddaughter, not a love interest this time.
Like, I don’t know…there are so many instances of movies and shows shoehorning in stupid SJW propaganda, you can easily focus on calling those out without making things up that aren’t even true to get angry about. Like I get “Kathleen Kennedy evil feminist,” but not every instance of a woman or POC being cast in something means There’s Trouble Afoot. I can completely understand not liking the direction of modern franchises and opting out of watching a movie or show because you don’t have faith in it being good at this point, so I’m not even going to say to “give it a chance” first if you really don’t want to watch it, but yeesh…at least be right about what you’re complaining about first.
