The Simple Life

Title: The Simple Life Author: JustBFree Fandom: Revenge Pairing: Emily/Nolan Genre: fluff, curtain Rating: M Summary: “We’ve come this far, but it’s finished now. It has to be.”  Word Count: 92,140 Warnings: n/a Commentary: Alright let me tell you, it took me YEARS to be able to weave humor and appropriate dialogue/jokes into fanfiction, especially concerning such a multi-faceted character as the cunning, bisexual, hacker-extrodieaire Nolan Ross. But somehow, JustBFree does that exceedingly well. She also makes good use of one-line paragraphs (something many fanfic writers--and professional writers--overuse) without them being cliche. Actually, she just avoids cliches altogether, which I don’t exactly know how, considering she’s domesticating two characters who never, ever are domesticated by the actual show.

All the Best and Brightest Creatures

Title: All the Best and Brightest Creatures Author: wordstrings Fandom: BBC Sherlock Pairing: Sherlock/John Genre: AU, angst Rating: Explicit Summary: Sherlock sent Jim Moriarty to prison for killing Carl Powers at age ten. This is the story of the consequences. Word Count: 163,003 (WIP) Warnings: Very graphic depictions of violence/torture, drug use Commentary: Don’t. Just... don’t. This is one of the most beautiful pieces of literature I have ever read. It is written in third person Sherlock POV, and somehow wordstrings manages to capture his personality perfectly despite the reader knowing his thoughts. The structure of the fic is marvelous, as well; sometimes there will be huge walls of dialogue with no narration, but the reader is so well prepared for these moments because of the vivid pictures of scenes painted already, it hardly matters. Plus, this fic is one of the most painful I have ever read, if not the most painful. And the AU fits flawlessly within the show’s perimeters.

Oxidation

Title: Oxidation Author: abbykate Fandom: BBC Sherlock Pairing: Sherlock/John Genre: AU, magical realism, angst, drug use Rating: Explicit Summary: When Sherlock Holmes, one of the world’s most famous modern painters, falls into an artists’ block, he takes a commission from Harriet Watson to paint her recently-deceased brother John. Warnings: graphic depictions of violence, major character death, angst Word Count: 27,969 Commentary: I cannot communicate the angst. There’s so much of it. It takes a competent writer to make his/her readers feel so much that it physically pains them, but abbykate does just that. Her character development, dialogue, and structure are all brilliant. A couple times she slips into a newspaper form, which keeps the writing interesting. Honestly, I don’t know how this writer managed to develop Sherlock’s character so well that he fits precisely into canon, but she did. And it’s incredible.

Last Outpost of All That Is

Title: Last Outpost of All That Is Author: gekizetsu Fandom: Supernatural Pairing: Sam/Dean Genre: AU, angst Rating: NC-17 Summary: “Don’t underestimate what I’ll do to keep you alive and safe,” Dean whispered. “Ever.” Warnings: incest, angst, the apocalypse Word Count: 58,997 Commentary: Not only was this work quality writing, entertaining, and intelligent, but it was inspiring. One of the poems I wrote junior year of high school was based off of this fic, and two years later it’s still a poem I’m proud of. Apocalypse AUs are so hard to do well because they’re overdone, but this fic presents it in a way like Cormac McCarthy presents The Road: it doesn’t feel overdone because it’s so different than everything else.

Ease Your Way into Occupied Spaces

Title: Ease Your Way into Occupied Spaces Author: joolabee Fandom: Sherlock (TV) Pairing: John Watson/Sherlock Holmes Genre: Angst Rating: Explicit Summary: One thing’s certain: this wasn’t the way it was supposed to happen. Warnings: Infidelity Word Count: 11,091 Commentary: Julia perfectly captures the feeling of longing with this fic. Her use of figurative language is on point, and she weaves scientific facts and snippets of info in the narrative, making it feel very in-character for a Sherlock-centric fic.
