I just read your reply to the first-time author and I'm wondering if there's a specific story of yours the negative comments have centred on or whether they're just the sort of scattered white bullshit noise that every author probably gets if they have a long fic career.

It'd be really nice if it was just one story! But it's really not.
Some stories have gotten more than others, and some get like, weirder ones than others, but I think every story at some point except for maybe a very small number have received something negative.
I find original fiction gets less overall but that's probably because original fiction gets less notice overall on AO3. That's not why most people are there (and a lot of people straight up refuse to read any original fiction there), so I think by the time someone clicks into an original fic on AO3, they're more likely to be mindful of the tags/warnings etc. And just proportionately less likely to be a douche.
Honestly they're proportionately very rare, and AO3 also gives me the ability to delete comments as well, which is not something we get on review sites! Lol. I've been very fortunate that the vast majority of comments I've received - the vast vast majority - are amazing.
