The relationship between Rugal and Samuel is one in which the latter was almost the perfect subject/lover. I use the term subject on the pretense that Rugal prefers complete submission and that is one of the primary reasons heâs trying to get to James in that he is quite malleable and trusting. If Rugal is giving someone himself he wants back fully. The jealousy in the scene in which he monitors Samuel and James getting together isnât shown to be solely fashioned toward James, he clearly states the agony of losing Samuel, if not that you notice that he was affected badly by their splitting and he does try to get Samuel back in some ways like when he teases the fact of who killed Samantha because he knows it will be fun to see him crumple because he still affected by what happened between them.
Samuel was to be the one, I think there are things we donât know in terms to why he left but I think it both intrigues and pisses Rugal off that heâs getting close to James and not just because of his attraction to James but because James is that person who has gotten to the heart of Samuel. Samuel is truly invested in killing Rugal and I donât find its all a mission from the people he now works with. I find that he thinks or knows himself to be in some way violated by Rugal which now stems into the idea of his memory wipes, but I also think its because of the image Rugal wanted him to project. As i have said before I do believe that Samuel killed his sister, I do think as of right now that was one step to have him completely break, but instead of him turning to Rugal he turned against him as he knew there was something off about her death and that had something to do with Rugal. Â
The fact of the matter is that I donât believe that Rugal loves and forgets, or forgives betrayals and Samuel plays a part in both of those. I think heâd rather him ruined then have him be with someone else because of his own hubris Samuel in away overpowered him by escaping him and its something that really tickles his fancy.  even in that he has become something more exciting as he has gone from the small flower under Rugalâs foot to a snake and its a delicious thing ( i canât think of how else to put it) for Rugal. also, I think Rugal finds that there are certain things that Samuel fills for him that James might not be able to.
Yet to be honest I donât think there has ever been any romantic love at all between Rugal and Samuel. ever in that, I donât think Rugal understands romance for romance has to be consensual between two people. What he had with Samuel and what he wants with James is by no measures romantic, it is an obsession to command and control, and he is then on top of it willing to destroy that person point in case Samuel if they donât become what he wants.Â
Samuel is a victim of abuse he deals with it by being snarky and rude, a backstabber and a liar to hide exactly just how broken he is. James is still light and always ready to do good. and the fact is that Samuel has become prickly, no good to Rugal because he knows a lot of the ins and outs of him and he could expose that If he didnât need his memories back, or maybe he knows that to heal he just has to end the person who broke him.
The thing is that their relationship as I have been saying has changed, it went from submission on the part of Samuel and a suffocating love on part of Rugal to healing / breaking free / fighting on Samuelâs part and revenge, anger/ moving on the part of Rugal. I also think that there is amusement in knowing that Samuel loves James and that is returned. Amusement because he finds it weak and finds it a bit beneath what Samuel has become and so I think he gets a thrill out of poking and pulling at Samuel in that way. ITs like he wanted Samuel to break fully so that he could have him and to know he couldnât have someone he loved the way he wanted it still stings and so he goes on to James who is basically younger Samuel in his innocence
and that is why Samuel tries to push him away, to keep him away from Rugal and the destruction this can all bring..Â
This is all theorized from what is out on tapas as of yet, though I have bought some of the Korean chapters from the official website that publishes it there and I am thinking of seeing if I can get a rough translation of a few parts of those chapters and post them here as spoilers. But I think it would be more fun to just wait weekly to get the official English translation because you get every chapter properly translated and not bits and pieces of random chapters that I google translated.
