there is something to be said about kiet and lyse that is rattling in my brain:
—stb being a time of transitions for them both: responsibilities, where they belong in the world, who they want to be in this world. their sense of self and identity changing. they both share this return to form, or revisiting the past. lyse learning this part of herself that she was cut off from at an early age to save her. kiet returning back to this part she thought she had killed for the sake of distancing herself from her mother. reconnecting the disconnects between them.
—and while i think it’s something they never spoke about openly, there was some…feeling of kinship. kiet remaining with lyse despite her clear objections with the whole affair. lyse’s well intentioned compliments as kiet is sitting through the mortification and joy of being perceived as a woman again.
—it’s tragic that they never get especially close, mostly on kiet’s part. she’s still very raw and wounded from losing ysayle that cultivating a close friendship again, esp with lyse running around in the rebellion so much, is a difficult ask. sigh. maybe if life had been kinder
