Jake believes in God but he's not sure that he thinks God is worth worshipping if so many people live through such pain. He grew up going to church once a week from 9 am (Sunday School) until they left around 12 or 1230 after worship and youth group on Wednesdays from 6 to 9.
Generally he thinks organized religion is a shield that people hide behind to justify causing other people damage or standing to the side when people who aren't "perfect" need help.
Yes, this has a lot to do with his very religious extended family growing up, who found a lot of ways to not help others but sure spouted a lot of Bible verses in the process. It has so much to do with being a "church kid" with visible bruises that never got more than some concerned noises.
He's pretty sure his absolute rage will get him sent to hell and he isn't always sure he cares. He hopes hell is real so that his father will go there.
Chris doesn't know what he thinks. Mostly he feels like there's probably something out there, but he couldn't say what. But it's nice to feel like he's part of something really big.
He goes to a UU church with Laken sometimes and finds them really nice and welcoming, and Laken is really into it, so he might eventually decide to really get more into that, too. But he's still feeling it out.
Sometimes Jake hums "It Is Well With My Soul", he still knows all the old hymns, and Chris feels something stir in him that he cannot define. He doesn't know that he is remembering all the times his mother sang that song when he had his hardest meltdowns and worst days, to comfort herself as much as him.
