legends of the dc universe (#28) // green lantern: emerald dawn part one #2) // dc comics presents: green lantern (2004)
what are the best comics that get into characterization of hal in your opinion?
oohh there's a lot, honourable mentions to everything john broome wrote for green lantern: 1960 and i suppose hal's portion of green lantern: 1990, which i only really like because it brought back the spirit of drifter hal for a bit (<- his best character era).
green lantern: 1960 #7, #16, #22, #24, #29, #30, #74, #76-89, #182-192
green lantern: 1990 #1-8 #14-17 #20-29 #46-50, #62-64
BUT the best comics for his characterization imo are
tales of the green lantern corps
emerald dawn part one and two
green lantern: willworld
dc comics presents: green lantern (2004)
action comics weekly #621-630 (<- or anything priest wrote in acw)
parallax: emerald night
the last will and testament of hal jordan
legends of the dc universe #28-29, #33-36
the spectre: 2001
the green lantern
the green lantern: blackstars
the green lantern season two
and yet another honourable mentions to sinestro #5 and green lantern: 2021 #4
Why does Sinestro have to be so extra when fighting Hal? I get it, you like to dominate that men and put him in compromising positions, you don't have to shove it in my face. Get a room.
The S in Sinestro stands for BDSM
Do you think Carol's life would be better if she were born male? Similarly, would Hal's be better if he were born female?
carol? yeah, without any doubt, she herself thinks her life would be better if she was born a man. so much of carol's (inter) personal issues stem from the fact that she wasn't born a son. she, obviously, faces a lot of misogyny as a woman in power and as the female heir of her father. but above wanting to be a man she wants to be her father's son.
in carol's FIRST APPEARANCE we're literally told how her father wanted a son and was disappointed carol was born a girl. this is something she would've heard a lot while growing up and we know she heavily internalised this.
her father wanted a son to be his legacy, but carol was a disappointment to him from birth, even her name being a sign of what she's lacking!
carl ferris controlled her life BECAUSE she was a woman. he gave her that power as CEO and then forbade her from doing anything she wanted. her relationships were all influenced by him (and I'd argue this is the main reason for carol currently being so friendless, because up until his death she wasn't free to do what she wanted).
this turned into more of me talking about how misogyny has affected carol's life but to summarise; all of her problems are caused by carl ferris punishing her for not being a son. her being born a boy would solve this singular but huge problem, because (s)he'd finally be able to make him proud and give him what he wants.
as for hal? I'm not too sure. i think his life would largely stay the same except for now having to deal with misogyny. a huge problem in hal's life is the toxic masculinity he constantly faces and has to deal within himself, that would simply be replaced by misogyny. i think it'd make his life worse.
like carol, so much of hal's issues are also his father's fault. i think hal being born a girl would worsen his relationship with his father, especially if his brothers remain boys. hal looked up to his father but his father never cared about him, that neglect would be made so much worse by hal being a girl while having two brothers.
why would his father, that normally doesn't care about him, care about a daughter wanting to be like him? she's a girl, this is a man's job etc. he already has two sons to share what's important with, she should stay a mama's girl.

Thinking abt parallax as a rape allegory and i feel ill for not discovering this before
when it comes to possessions and the loss of bodily autonomy, the connection is always there to make and with parallax's obsession with hal and the terms it uses for him (my precious, my host, [my] significant other), or how it refers to being one with hal again a pleasure and its possession of hal an union hal must stop fighting, I'm surprised i haven't seen this discussed more. sinestro calls parallax a demon lover, and in that very same issue hal is forced to "submit" to it and left alone in tattered clothes. it forces significant changes on hal's body, worsens his mental state and goes after everybody hal cares about - really it's all there and it's not surprising that this comes from the personification of fear.
(there's more to say about how the different emotional entities enact violence on/ control the people that use its powers - the predator is very much an allegory for sexual assault as well, doesn't matter which version of it you reference; whether it's pre-crisis where he forces a kiss out of carol (who is him and is star sapphire) or it's a demonic entity that got star sapphire pregnant, thus denying carol of her autonomy OR if it's simply the entity of love that preys on carol's emotions and declares its love for her. but that's a separate topic)
