Ok now why am I getting death threats for disliking John Walker (tfatws version, not talking abt whatever he is in the comics) and making a post about that.
Why are people acting as if there is No Valid Reason to dislike his character? Did yall watch the show with your eyes closed?
This man is meant to personify the white privelege in the USA (lets all use our brains and think why they showed that the government gives the shield to a blonde blue eyed white man, what the show is textually telling us with it, how the plot of John pursuing the serum runs parallel to Sam finding out what Isaiah went through bc of the serum, etc.),
He is meant to show the us-centric worldview prevalent in the USA and its military (why does he say the dora milaje dont have jurisdiction in Prague - as if he DOES have jurisdiction on foreign soil),
He gets a tick on his fingers for violently killing someone in a public square - and it was not in act of fighting the flag smashers, btw. It was directly motivated by revenge ("he killed Lemar")
The serum, mcu canonically, strengthens traits a person already has. Why does the serum turn him so incredibly violent, and revenge-driven instead of righteousness driven, as Steve was?
About which: This man believed he needed the serum in order to be Captain America, while the whole of CA:TFA shows up that its not his powers and strength, but his beliefs and convictions and usage of the power which makes Steve Captain America. This is shown to us in the show as something about which John is wrong about.
As someone not from the USA, I see all the bad traits of the USA and its international doings personified in this man. I get reminded of a USA military who ones went to the shop i work at and called me rude for not "respecting him and his work enough". That man has done nothing for me or my country or my people. He is a citizen. He does not deserve special treatment for choosing a certain job.
People can like ""bad guys"" all they want, truly. A character being morally complex is what makes them interesting in my opinion (hence why i dislike Steve Rogers in the MCU: he never faces any internal moral dilemma's strong enough to endear him to me - but other people do like him, which is more than fine! Its just opinion!).
This is the reason I do like Tony Stark - hes objectively morally not 100% pure, which i find interesting to explore. Other people hate him for the reason I like him - which is also more than fine. My life doesnt change depending on what other people think about Tony Stark. I have bills to pay and friends to enjoy time with, etc.
And for the same reason, people are allowed to like John Walker. Maybe they like the possible dilemma after killing someone after Lemar died. Maybe they like to see him struggle with the shield and his belief he has been wronged. Idk! There are interesting things here! And yet i dislike him, which is what OPINIONS ARE.
So: me not liking John Walker does not mean i am an asshole, or should kill myself. What is wrong with you people. John Walker does not exist. He does not have emotions. The moment the camera stops and you click of the movie and are not thinking of him, he stops existing. Such is the existence of fictional characters.
Speak Now and Hey Stephen is peak comedy once again.
