Save Your Date ♡ Vanderwalker
Of all the things Jesse would have figured he'd be doing in the wee hours of the morning, making sandwiches in low lighting was not one of them. At least not ones to-go (there was always room for sandwiches no matter the hour). There were other salvaged snacks too, all thrown together in a makeshift picnic hamper and he was debating whether or not to toss in a couple of crazy straws too as he cut the current sandwich masterpiece into triangles. There were rectangle ones too and he'd made a mental note to ask Sophia about her preference afterwards. Sophia. His heart twinged. It was not long ago (like, really not long ago) she was dancing and smiling and being tucked under her blankets and now...
His mom had been the one who accidentally let it slip off her tongue. Of course the whole Upper East Side was bound to be abuzz with the news soon enough. Maybe not at this hour but still, he just knew that she knew. Jesse hated to think of Sophia upset, even more so crying unless it was brought on by a spectacular fictional depiction of love, loss and everything in between. The “save the dates” for the Vandervort wedding were making the rounds and the tears Sophia had cried after telling him about her dad's engagement were still fresh in his mind. He wasn't sure if the twinge in his heart was out of sadness or anger.
Either way, he hadn't been able to sleep that night anyways. So he'd gotten up, dressed and had started making sandwiches. It's not as if Jesse had much of a plan and he'd only just decided where they could go when he was closing the door to his Chevy pick-up. He had, of course, left a note on the fridge for his mom. It was a shot in the dark or dull pre-sunrise light but he had an inkling that Sophia might have been just as awake as him.
It had only ever been Jesse, Jason and their mom as far as he could remember and that had always been enough. More than enough. There wasn't anyone on this earth who loved him the way that his mom did. But Sophia's dad had been there and he was sure Sophia felt like no one would ever love her the way her dad did and he disappointed her. “Disappointed” may have been too tame a word but it was probably too early for anything else. He felt a little helpless wanting to help her and be there for her and make her feel better. There was no one thing he could possibly do to make this okay but he'd be darned if he didn't try. Pulling up outside of the Vandervort home (electricity now fully working in the whole neighboourhood again), he hesitated over his phone. It was such a silly thing, right? Feeling nervous about texting. About texting her because he always felt incredibly comfortable around Sophia (or maybe it was just incredible) but still... How many emojis were appropriate?
Eventually settling on a pair of eyes, a monkey and a sparkle heart Jesse hit 'send': Do you want to go for a drive, miss Vandervort? 'Cause I promise the black pick-up outside your house isn't creepy. The driver is actually a pretty nifty guy, the word on the UES street is xxxx
Was that enough emojis? Too much? He'd just have to wait and see.
