Tony Trivia #25
At six nominations apiece, mother-daughter duo Rose and Louise from Gypsy are the most-nominated characters on Broadway. It helps that Gypsy is one of the most-oft produced musicals on the Great White Way, with each pair in the six production receiving nominations.
Starting with Ethel Merman (who lost to Mary Martin in The Sound of Music), subsequent Roses include Angela Lansbury*, Tyne Daly*, Bernadette Peters, Patti LuPone*, and now Audra McDonald. Louises include Sandra Church, Zan Charisse, Crista Moore, Tammy Blanchard, Laura Benanti*, and now Joy Woods.
Should Audra McDonald win, Madame Rose becomes the most celebrated role on Broadway with four total wins, overtaking Anna Leonowens from The King and I, George from Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Medea from Medea. and Pseudolus from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.
