Having a thought... tied to a very long pondering on Eldritch/Cosmic beings and their nature/purpose in the Supernatural universe.
So far, canonically, we have four Cosmic beings. Chuck/God/Being, Death, Amara, and now the guardian of the Empty.
The later three are all expressions of nothingness. They all express the same level of infinite essence, and they’re... oddly defined by each other’s existence.
First was nothing, empty, void. Then was destruction, chaos, consuming hunger. Then Death, the Reaper, devouring stars and souls and gods alike. The Empty defines itself as first, before God and before Amara. Amara defines herself as before Chuck, she is the Beginning. And Death said he was as old as, if not older, than God; but neither of them could remember.
With my Eldritch Monster Professor hat on... this sounds like the same being. If anyone has read Sandman, it’s the facet analogy at work.
Cosmic beings are by definition beyond human comprehension; what we (or the characters) therefore perceive is a piece of a larger whole. Say you hold a cut jewel up to the light; the light will catch on one facet or another, and that bit will spark and flare into focus, but it isn’t the whole gem, it’s only a piece. That facet may flicker and die as the jewel is moved around in the light, but it isn’t destroyed, nor does any part of the jewel become diminished. A new facet simply comes into focus.
I think it’s only one creature, all three of them. The Emptyness came first and then a new facet came into being, the Darkness; a Dark to counteract the Light, a being defined by its opposite and partner. Then Amara was locked away, and around that time Death came into existence (because Amara never knew Death, and Death never met Amara). And then Death was killed, and who knows if there wasn’t another facet that came into focus and introduced herself as a reaper...
This is the part where I point and flail at next week’s episode and the fact that Billie is back, right after we meet the Eldest Dark. Because if they are all one massive Darkling creature...
I sincerely doubt the writers are going there, but I am A Suspicious Cabbage.
