NO MATTER HOW DANIEL MEANS IT, the words seem to come off as a warning for Michael, ignites the steady drum of guilt through his skull. He didn't tell Daniel ( or anyone, for that matter ) much for a damn reason. Multiple reasons, really, but years spent carrying the reputation of not only his own mistakes but his father's crimes as well leave deep-seated scars. It grew too suspicious: Michael's insistence on returning to his family's origins, the kind of restlessness that only comes with unfinished business ( as if he's already a ghost ). Michael shouldn't have clued him in, not when he knows Daniel is too stubborn to ignore something like this.

It pushed him to a brink: far enough to allude to what was really behind those tragedies.

"What's that supposed to mean?" He snaps— paranoid, despite Daniel showing nothing but concern. He can't shake the feeling like he's being looked at as if he's a time bomb, as if going back means heeding his father's call enough to sink to his level ( the truth is... he's projecting what he's already ashamed to feel onto the conversation, how much he... does really crave being of some kind of value ). "I'm not doing what he wants, alright— I'm..." He takes a sharp breath. "— I tried moving on, it hasn't worked. I can't just ignore it. "
