Let's Learn Pokémon with Professor Oak!

"Welcome back to my scheduled programme! Today, we'll be taking a look at #0024 in the Pokédex, Arbok!"

"Arbok is a Poison type Pokémon, and the evolved stage of Ekans. It has a long, scaly, purple body which it uses to strangle and crush opponents or prey effectively. Nearly all parts of it are capable of regenerating once cut off."

"Its jaw has sharp, venomous teeth, and can open wide to swallow prey whole. Just below the head is a wide patch of skin, with a pattern meant to resemble frightening facial features, to terrify and confuse foe and prey alike. As of now, there have been twenty different variations of this pattern discovered."

"Despite having no limbs, Arbok are pretty good tree climbers and swimmers, and have a lung capacity that allows them to stay submerged for quite a while. Though Arbok prefers living in grassy savannas and plains. In the wild, it uses its keen sense of smell and ability to sense vibrations through skin to detect prey and possible danger. It is highly territorial, and there a documented occurrances of villages in the jungle having to evacuate because an Arbok chased everyone away, and it does not give up pursuit easily."

"Trainers and adventurers who venture into areas with large Arbok populations are told to listen for the eerie warning sounds it makes by expelling air from its mouth. When it has consumed prey, it will retreat into its nest, sleeping while digesting its food."

"Despite its jostile nature, any trainer that manages to tame an Arbok will find that it is pretty docile when it trusts you, as documented by a pupil of mine:"

"Arbok prefers to curl up on soft surfaces, preferably in the sun. Whenever it can, it will find something to hold on to while sleeping, much like a child with a stuffed animal. This is different from their behavior in the wild, where they sleep with their patterns exposed, to scare of potential danger."

Applejack is the mum friend. The one who grew up too fast and is feeling all these responsibilities and pressures to be at her best in order to take everypony (as an effect of her dead parents).

Sure, she has Big Mac, but one pony can only help so much. I think she feels like she always needs to be on her best and refuses help. She’s the type to start suppressing fever symptoms or stop eating so that her family can.

In canon,*cough* To run away when she thinks she hasn’t made the criteria or *cough* to always think of her family first when she has money/an opportunity.

Examples: Grand Galopping Gala, The Last Round Up.

Rainbow is the pony who feels the need to prove herself. An amazing analysis by @/appledashdailydoodles suggests she felt the need to be actually good because her parents saw everything she did as the best thing ever.

Example: Like, legit the whole of Parental Glidance. I could go into more depth but I think I'm actually dissociating right now. Sorry. Maybe I'll go into more detail in the future.

Anyway.

The pressures: AJ feels the need to always be on her best, maybe even sometimes the best and Rainbow feels the need to be the best and actually good. Sure, maybe when they compete they just enjoy the competition, the action, the thrill, the victory or simply annoying the other but things like this really shape a person and their upbringings could have an effect on it.

Maybe competing (especially winning) is a break for them. Or maybe it brings them fufillment and happiness. Maybe it’s both.

I love these two. The Mane6 are all so great, and this is just another example of fact that they all compliment each other so damn nicely.

Pokemon: Shiny vs. Default, 0023-0024

Okay, we’re finally out of the early route things (mostly) and onto one of Gen I’s many, many Poison types. I wish this line was better, but Arbok’s movepool isn’t kind to it, with no STAB that runs off its superior Attack stat besides the abysmal Poison Sting, and the inaccurate Gunk Shot at Lv.63. Yeah for some reason this Poison-type snake learns neither Poison Fang or Poison Tail by level, and has to get them via breeding.

Also it really should’ve gotten the Dark type in Gen II, to give Kanto some native Dark types and give it STAB on those Dark moves it learns.

Anyway, griping about how underwhelming this Pokemon is, let’s talk shinies. First on the docket is Ekans.

Aaaaand it’s green. I guess it’s not an awful shade for a snake, but still, very boring. Default wins.

Arbok’s turn.

Thankfully, Arbok trades in the green for a much more pleasing gold. It looks really good, but Arbok’s purple scales also look really good. So I’m going to call this one a draw!
