I'll be honest and probably unpopular opinion, it took the anime, manga, Masters, and Evolutions to make me like Sycamore. (Aside from being mutually toxic shipbait/aesthetically.)

The anime had him being proactive, but he didn't know Lysandre there, so my biggest issue with him didn't exist. The manga, he addresses his earlier mistake in brushing off the protagonists' concerns about Lysandre and is active in trying to help do some beneficial research to help them out, so I'm more willing to pardon him. Masters and Evolutions actually address the aforementioned issue and have him argue against Lysandre's viewpoint, tho I do think the Masters version of him still comes off as pretty naive.

I was always really frustrated by how he was handled in XY tho, especially the impersonal way he just sent his aides to help out. Sure, he's not capable of Mega Evolution, but he's still a pretty capable Trainer using the three Kantonian starter evos, and in the XY demo, Chandelure, Crobat, and Dragonite, he should have been on the front lines with us. They were friends, and while I don't think he could have known things would escalate to the point they did, he at least KNEW Lysandre was spiralling and blames himself for how things ended up, but it just comes off as too little, too late, so his apology was just irritating. (It's one of the reasons why I want him to be in ZA even if he stepped down as Professor, maybe they can do more to redeem his gameverse-version.)
