009-1 (2006) - Episode 1

Wow, I may have seen this show twice already but boy do I not remember ANYTHING. Also, I now have a lot more context, having consumed all of Cyborg 009. This should be fun.

-This show is low-key offensive if you think about it too much, but if you watch it as a fun, schlocky retro love letter to the 60s, I think it holds up. I’m not gonna dwell on the questionable stuff here.

-So apparently Mylene is pronounced “Mee-lane.” I’ve been pronouncing it “My-lean” this whole time...oops

-I’ve only read one volume of the manga at this point but so maybe it changes, but the anime seems to focus more on the team-aspect. I think I like this better because Mylene is kind of stoic so she can only go solo for so long.

-Mylene’s teammates are kinda female counterparts of the Cyborg 009 characters. 009-4 has a missile in her knee, 009-7 can transform, and 009-3 has camera eyes. 009-1 is just unique I guess, her powers are not like 001 or 009′s. 

-Can I just point out that the male equivalent of giving your lead boob guns is giving them a dick gun? I want equal opportunity objectification or none at all! 

-The dub has accents, hurray! They’re pretty bad, but that’s okay. (probably better than I could do). I hate it when dubs wimp out on the accents because it makes shows so much more fun. 

-I low key had trouble following the plot but in the end this is an action-spy anime so I don’t think it’s going to be super deep in the lore department. The fight scene at the end was pretty good and so were the team work action sequences  

-I was a little shook to see a lesbian sex scene all of the sudden. Although yuri is common in anime straight up sex definitely isn’t. Sure, they made the bad guy gay but Mylene also said the sex was “amazing” so...uhh...gay rights?

-I honestly really like Mylene’s character design. It’s just so memorable and unique. She kinda has a mom hairdo lol 

-The only two things I can think of to compare this with (Cyborg 009) are Totally Spies and Charlie’s Angels. The spy genre sure is tiny. Even thinking of famous male spies I can’t think of that many: James Bond, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Mitchell (lol) 

-I hope we get to know Mylene’s past and it’s not just: she gets mission, she does mission, repeat. I’m sure we will. I’m definitely curious to know how she became a cyborg and why 

-Really love the fashion montage in the OP. (Although the song doesn’t do much for me).

Shotaro Ishinomori’s works are old and from the nonsensical showa era, yet I can’t help but enjoy every single bit of writing of every series.

I swear, it still holds up to modern hits like Re:Zero and Death Note.

And his stories are for children. FOR CHILDREN!

The tragedy of being a hero and yet being able to smile through it all.

Seriously, every single one of you reading this: watch Kikaider, watch Cyborg 009, watch Kamen Rider, watch 009-1, I don’t care, pick up one of his works.

Anyone can get into it. Literally anyone.

Pick up one, I beg of you, because you are all missing out on something amazing if you don’t.

It’s not worth dying until you experience his works.
