Time Lord!Quartermaster & Companion!Bond
One more thing appears to be something Bond requests of Q fairly often. Q seems rather defeated and has stopped dead in his tracks to listen despite being clearly annoyed that Bond is asking him to break more rules. (Which is honestly more heartbreaking bc of how much Danny should fear MI6) Bond seems fairly aware of this and like he knows that smiling like that is enough to get Q to do whatever he needs him to.
However-- I don’t think Bond is purposefully taking advantage of Q’s willingness to bend rules and defy M’s orders. I believe that Bond is wrapped up in his own sense of self so much that he simply doesn’t realise what kind of affect he’s having on our Quartermaster. Bond has quite the ego, that’s part of being Bond, and with such an ego comes the territory of being responsible of what that ego does to others.
Edit: Plus, that smile? It might just remind Danny of a certain man from memory lane.

For movie or TV muses, what is your muse’s favorite scene? Why? Can you show a screenshot?
Was it right to say he was jealous?
For numerous reasons, Q would never be a tried field agent. Not for lack of attempt on his own part, much of it stemmed from select overheads refusing him the chance. He was known to be soft of heart and too often expressed his opinions of the actions he would need to carry out. He wasn’t weak or of flimsy will by any means - in fact, the opposite.
Entirely too often he had proven capable of finding loopholes, straying from the task at hand and figuring a way to reduce damage to innocent bystanders, even if it meant costing the success of a mission. This was not what the organisation wanted in a field agent. His mind was too valuable and his adeption at handling security systems and corporate clean up was much better suited to being placed behind a desk, directing action and finagling tools for the operatives to use. A modern MacGuyver, if you will. All of this on top of certain health concerns that put him far too much at risk, as well as risked the safety of anyone who might work beside him in certain circumstances. Keep him close, keep him home.
Too many of the field agents he had worked with had made it clear they were doing a job and thought of their missions - eliminate so-and-so, remove such object from the public eye, clear away a certain source of trouble. Even the language they used made everything impersonal.
“ It always makes me feel a litle melancholy, grand ol’ warship being ignaminiously hauled away for scrap. The inevitability of time, don’t you think? What do you see? ”
And then there was 007. His approach with every new agent he worked with played out unlike this one. His attempts at bringing in a human touch by preceeding an assignment with an attempt at conversation, be it the history of a meeting place’s significance in the grand scheme of the human story, the styling influences behind the intercomm music, or in this case: theory and impressions of a piece of art.
“ A bloody big ship. ”
Naturally. Of course the agent would attempt to walk away - His approach was unconventional, and a human touch to something that was, quite literally, just a job.
“ Double-o Seven. I’m your new Quartermaster. ”
What proceeded from there, however, was entirely different from anything Danny had ever experienced working with the agents. An annoyed huff, and this? Snark. Banter was traded without hesitations, minor insults and a clear groundwork for how their professional relationship would be playing out over the next stretch of time. Would it be a few weeks or less? Or years to come? This might be one agent that actually provides something personal to his work.
007 was human. Perhaps he might even try to learn the man’s name, in time. Surprised? Yes. Pleased? Time would tell.
What do you have in mind?
That look. You know the one - when someone who knows how to push Danny’s buttons does exactly that while making a request of him. This is precisely why he toes so many lines and tries for the most part to keep his head down.
It’s something he’s hyper aware of: He is a pushover. However, he only bends to people who meet certain qualifications. These aren’t any set in stone, written and concrete qualifications. No, it takes a level of empathy and pattern observance to really know when he’s face to face with someone who meets them. He has an ingrained desire to feel two things around someone: To feel needed, and to feel safe.
Q. is a man who follows rules for the most part as strictly as possible, both the letter and the spirit. He has seen firsthand what happens when rules are skirted if not outright broken and that is not a gun he ever wants to be on the wrong end of ever again. The thought of going back there terrifies him. Because of this, when he recognises in someone a sense of their being protective of what’s dear to them as well as the ability to actually back that protective instinct up be it through resources, intelligence, sheer brute strength, emotional support, guidance, etc, he will go out of his way and even inconvenience or endanger himself and his career (on occasion) to do things to protect and provide for these people in the hopes that they might do so in return should he find himself in danger.
This is why, despite being told not to, he provides James with weapons and trinkets that aren’t exactly the sleek, modern spy devices he honestly prefers to see on the field, such as the exploding watch we see in Spectre. The tendency to cater towards James’ destructive and haphazard style is actually in direct contrast to Daniel’s preference to reduce collateral damage and the casualties of innocent bystanders as much as possible, lest he play an indirect role in creating another story just like his own.
He has seen, both in reports as well as personal witnessing, that when the people close to Bond are in danger, insulted or hurt, the agent will go to drastic measures to overkillingly solve the problem. He would rather never see himself on the receiving end of a rabid double-oh’s anger, and so defies his personal moral codes to make James happy with him. Allows himself to be walked over for the sake of endearing himself and ensuring that should he be hurt, Bond will help.
Danny also knows that Bond does not usually always agree with the decisions of MI-6. Daniel’s greatest fear just so happens to be that if he steps out of line, then his career and life will once again be in danger from the same things that had him fearing for his life thirteen years ago. Wouldn’t it be nice to trust that should that happen, he has a close friend willing to protect him who knows how to use dangerous weapons?
“ Ah, 007.”
“ Q.”
“ Please excuse the mess, everything’s a bit up in the air, what with the changes and all. Shall we get started? ”
I was that man.
And you were that someone.
