I could talk about Washington's Secret War but I'm just not that into it - either in an excited way or in a complaining way. Not enough Laurens or Hamilton ^___^ (or Washington either for that matter!). I do like getting a little background on some of the other aides. Like Tench Tilghman, in his thirties, older than the rest of the aides, is someone Washington knew pre-war. Because he's a background character in lots of canon-set fics :D. But um. I am feeling the common frustration of both - all these anecdotes about the infighting in Congress and the absolute mess of the supply chain are amusing, but they're repetitive rather than adding up to something.
With all the tiny numbered sections in each chapter it literally looks like… each of them is an index card from your research phase, and you never quite figured out how to stitch them together well. Where's the argument!? You keep saying what people meant and not supporting it. Anyway, it's not a bad book? But the only one's I'd rec so far are Chernow and Revolutionary Women, and maybe Hamilton's parts of the Federalist Papers ;D.
[eta I have read many books since I wrote this and I’d say The Hemingses of Monticello is the best of them so far. by far.]
