Funseekers,
Let it not be said that I have fully retired. I have been weighing numerous options, the latest of which I have now formally rejected. This decision was not arrived at in a cavalier fashion. No, it was reached after what can be termed a brief “internship”.
With the kids and family having relocated to various exotic places around the country (Washington, DC, Florida, California, Colorado, etc) there have been numerous times in which someone was flying in for a visit and Elise would drive to pick them up at the airport. Most often, this was while I was at work, and I would just arrive home to join in the joyous welcome of our latest visitors.
Now that I am somewhat less than fully occupied during my days at home, I have taken on that activity. This morning being the latest as I ran a nephew to JFK for a flight to San Francisco, having just picked him up last night from the same airport (that’s a story in and of itself, more later). Well, having done a number of these trips, I have now decided that the position of Airport Chauffeur is no longer a career option. Allow me to explain.
First of all, the working conditions are not the best. The exceptionally heavy traffic on Long Island is constant, regardless of time of day (I have been known to speculate that most of these cars are “homeless” - living in their cars, figuring the cost of gas is lower than real estate taxes here, so they are always out driving!) Racing a plane’s estimated arrival or departure time versus my estimate of how long it will take to get there is a regular cause of indigestion.
A moving truck that had attempted to enter the Southern State Parkway caused this morning’s congestion, right at the entrance I was using. Unfortunately for both of us, the driver obviously did not know that trucks were not allowed on the parkway. These roads were built in the thirties, when no vehicle was taller than five feet or so. As such, there are overpasses that have only ten feet of clearance…..
Yep, you guessed it, there he was in a truck with a height of something the far side of ten feet. Wedged beneath the overpass, surrounded by police vehicles, he appeared to be trying to figure out how he was going to explain to his boss that he had just ruined his vehicle and most of its contents! Needless to say, this caused traffic to back up and my estimated time to the airport started to look seriously short.
The morning indigestion came on with a roar. However, being the good, knowledgeable chauffeur, I assured my passenger that I had left plenty of time for such emergencies. Of course, the longer the delay and the remaining normal delays, the more the indigestion, and the shorter my quotes of time needed to get to the airport that I provided to him. Gotta love Long Island traffic!! (Yes, we did make it on time, and I assume my nephew made his flight. Though I am not sure of that since, as he ran to the terminal, I quickly headed back to the parkway for the return trip home.)
Another reason I have given up on this career track is the compensation. There is none! Indeed, the tips are usually of the type that my son gave me on our last harrowing trip to get him to LaGuardia on a Sunday afternoon (another near miss): “I told you we should have taken the Northern State instead of the LIE….” (Said about two exits after the choice was made and we sat in weekend construction closings.)
Of course, the hours are not the best either. Yes, long on down time, but never convenient. For example, last night I missed two prime time sitcoms, and had to wolf down a couple slices of pizza in a hurry, since the airline site on the internet indicated, at 7:55 that my nephew’s flight was arriving at 8:30, earlier than the scheduled 8:55! (Try not being late for a pickup with a stomach full of sausage and pepper topped pizza – oops, was that not allowed on the South Beach Diet?) Only to find that the actual arrival was 9:00 (which is not considered late by the airlines since it is within ten minutes of schedule!?)
There are a number of other reasons that I have rejected this career path, but I have meandered long enough to give you the idea. Today I am exploring the option of orthodontia. I think I can get the required degrees online, but am not sure about the practical experience requirement. More on that after I do more research.
Oh yes, about my nephew’s coming in last night and leaving this morning. No, it was not the hospitality or lack thereof… He is moving from San Francisco to Washington, DC. He found a deal with American Airlines that gave him a free trip anywhere AA flies if he took two cross country trips before April. With reduced fares available during this slow period, he is able to move all of his stuff here in two trips and get a free trip to Brazil, for only $360! Hey, hold on that orthodontia idea, maybe I could start up a travel agency!?
