With most of her tasks for the day completed, Ro found herself able to indulge in a little reconnaissance of the entertaining persuasion. She went into Seelie territory: into the beating heart of it, into the floral glitz of it, into the wood panel of it with the heavily patterned rug and the walls without windows. Ro went to Oakenfold. When she entered, she saw the forefront in its usual drone-eyed state, a series of people sedentary, slowly turning to speed bumps, to fossils in front of the slots and the video roulette and other video gambling machines. None of these interested Ro. She wanted the piece of gambling that was illegal in New York: she wanted the tables. 

Heading to a door in the back that was black marked Employees Only, she rapped on the door three times and then said the passphrase, “Wrought and rotten,” the universal passcode for the secret areas of both Oakenfold and the Rookery. At the Rookery, it got you into the Library with the elixirs; here, it got you into the Boutique, where all the real gambling tables were kept. If you wanted to hold cards in your hand, wanted to slide chips for betting or expensing, if you wanted to touch the dice—this was how to do it. Ro headed right for one of the two craps tables; there was only one working tonight because it was a Wednesday and she hoped it was hot. Putting a stack of cash on the table, she took her hands out of the way quickly, winking up at the cameras on the ceiling.

Soon, chips were in hand for betting and she put one on the pass line and two behind it to back it up, then three chips on the 6 and the 8 and two on the 5, waiting to see how this shooter would roll. The game was On for 9 and she was hoping for a front line winner. The other players were smiling, which counted for something, and she could see a few familiar fey faces among all those in this section of the casino. As the dice came out a hard 8, Ro cheered along with the rest for her winnings on the side bet—and it was about that time that the King himself decided to amble up to her. Eyes slightly narrowed, but a smile all the same and knowing her territory as well as being in public, she said, “Oh, Mr. Fairchild! Nice to see you on the floor—or is it?” with a laugh at the end, wondering who might be the unfortunate soul to drag him from the office.
