Not the words, not the affection, not the way I loved him in excess, the kind that came naturally to me, but always felt like too much to him. Something unnecessary. Something he could live without.
The truth is, he can live without these things, and it's not important, the way I love or perhaps my love was never that important.
But there are things in this world that you don’t need, and still don’t get to forget.
He’s going to end up with someone who fits him better.
Someone who thinks like him, moves like him, loves the way he does. Someone who doesn’t need reassurance, who doesn’t express affection the way I did, who doesn’t overwhelm him with words or closeness.
Someone easier. Someone more aligned.
The kind of relationship he always believed made more sense.
Because there are things that don’t get replaced just because something else fits better.
Like dishes you used to eat all the time and can never have again.
You don’t crave them.
You don’t look for them.
But you remember exactly how they tasted.
There will be nights when he’s lying in bed next to her, and everything is fine, everything is calm, everything is exactly the kind of peace he always said he wanted,
and he will think about my goodnight messages.
The same ones he used to complain about.
The same ones he said were unnecessary.
He won’t say them anymore.
But when he types “good night” out of habit and stops himself, he’ll realise.. she doesn’t need this.
And in that moment, he will think of me.
When she gives him the kind of peace he was always looking for, he’s going to realise what comes with that peace.
And he will remember my chaos.
My clinginess.
The way I loved him without holding anything back.
The way I made him feel wanted, needed, chosen, without ever making him ask for it.
When he finally finds the emotional connection he couldn’t find with me, when he’s with someone who understands him in the way he always wanted to be understood,
he’s going to realise something else is missing.
Because someone like him won’t give in the way I did.
Won’t bend the way I did.
Won’t love the way I did.
And only then will he understand what it meant that I did.
Even in the quietest moments, even when he is in a relationship that works better, that feels more right, that looks more stable,
there will be flashes of memory.
The way I touched him.
The way I knew him.
The way I gave him everything without hesitation.
The things he said he didn’t need,
he’s going to remember them.
Not because he wants them back.
Not because anything is lacking.
But because they came from me.
And he will start to question it.
Why everything finally fits,
and yet something still feels off.
And no matter who comes after,
he will realise
something is missing.
Just not enough
to know it was me.
