It is that time of the month again, but not for you, for the Mu Alpha Theta fraternity. Chan warned you to stay away from the house even though the boys should all be locked inside their rooms. Better safe than sorry, right? You’ve taken his warning seriously and are just coming out of the undergraduate library, half-way across campus, so why is there a big, brown canine snarling at you?
“Nice, Hyunjin, nice,” you say shakingly.
The moon illuminates your surroundings brightly. You aren’t sure if you should thank it for the extra visibility or curse it for letting you see the deadly teeth protruding from the wolf’s mouth. The pattern on his wrist glows brightly, indicating how he found you in the middle of this sleeping campus.
“Good doggie,” you try again despite knowing that your words are not making sense in his now-primitive mind.
Hyunjin growls, circling you and shortening the radius with every step.
“Hyunjin,” you say as a warning.
He takes a step back, but not to retreat. Instead he pounces, teeth baring and claws extended. You cover your vitals with your bag, and in a moment of desperation, cry, “Hyunjin, sit!”
You crouch a little lower, bracing yourself for the impact, but it doesn’t come. Instead, you hear a whimper. You slowly lower your arms from your face and see Hyunjin on his bottom, looking at you with a tilted head and a flicking tail.
“Y-you sat,” you breath, shocked.
“Ooo,” he whines.
“You sat!” You let out a few laughs of relief and approach him slowly. You extend your hand and have it find his head, rubbing the fur gently. “Good boy, Hyunjin, good boy!”
He lets out a content noise and changes the angle of his head for you to pet another spot. After a while, you straighten up.
“Okay, Hyunjin, let’s take you home now, shall we?”
He bumps your arm for more pets, not understanding you.
“Okay, umm,” you ponder. “Hyunjin, follow.”
He lets out a whine and remains seated.
“Alright, how about this?”
You pull out your pencil pouch from your bag and hurl it in the direction of the fraternity house. As hoped, Hyunjin pounces after the projectile after you command, “Fetch!” You run after the wolf, hoping to cover some distance before he returns the pouch back to you.
After many tosses and petting breaks, you finally arrive in front of his house with your arms aching and lungs gasping for air.
“We’re here!” you exclaim, more to yourself than him. “Look, Hyunjin! Home!”
He wags his tail, eyes focused on your now-deformed pencil holder.
“Let’s see how you got out and get you back in there…”
You do not have to look long; his window lock lays uselessly on the lawn, and upon looking up, you see a busted window on the second floor.
“Can you jump back up there?” you ask rhetorically and give your pouch another toss into the room.
You smile triumphantly as he gracefully leaps after it, but groan in frustration when he brings it back. You have to go with him to his destination like you’ve been doing all along.
“Alright then,” you huff. “Let’s try this!”
The pouch is tossed one last time, but before Hyunjin could jump, you wrap yourself around his torso and bite your tongue to suppress a scream. Once he lands, you roll off onto the floor, and he drops the pencil case on you happily.
“Good boy,” you sigh wearily. “Now staaay.” You put your hands in front of you as you slowly move backwards towards the door.
Apparently Hyunjin was never taught “stay,” and for every step you take, he takes two until he is pinning you to the door, lapping your face with his tongue.
“Okay, okay,” you giggle, wiping your face with your sleeve. “You win; I’ll keep you company until the sun comes back up.”
Hyunjin wags his tail happily. You find a basketball and roll it around for him. While he is distracted, your eyes zone out on the glowing pattern on his wrist. It’s so detailed and carefully crafted just for him like you are. What is the point of soulmates, you wonder, if they can be so easily cast aside? Before you can come to an answer, your weariness catches up to you, and your eyes go dark.
“Bloody howl.”
You wake up to a foul hiss. You open your eyes to see Hyunjin above you turning his face away and burying it in his hand. You quickly sit up, realizing you were resting in his lap just a second ago.
“I’m sorry!” you apologize and rush to your feet.
“No, it’s kind of my fault,” he sighs, joining you on his feet and going to his window to see the damage done. “Just… just leave please.”
“Right,” you nod and head for the door.
“And uh,” he calls and you turn around. He looks nervous. “Don’t tell Jiyoung what happened. I’ll tell her myself.”
“We didn’t do any--”
He cuts you off with a shake of his head. “She doesn’t know about the whole wolf thing, so even the fact that you stayed over, it’s… it’s suspicious.”
“Okay.”
He gives you a nervous smile. You can see the guilt he’s feeling for the injustice he’s done to his girlfriend. “Thanks.”
You quietly shut the door to his room behind you and make your way to the front door. You walk down the hall until another door opens in front of you.
“Good morning, Y/N,” mumbles a sleep deprived Jisung with a toothbrush in his mouth. He blinks twice before realizing what he just said. “Y/N?!”
“Good morning,” you laugh nervously.
Jisung hurls his toothbrush back into the room, runs frantic hands through his hair to comb it, and clears his throat. “Ahem. Hi! What are you doing here?”
“N-not much. I, uh, got kidnapped by one of the wolves yesterday.”
His eyes widen in worry as he cups your face, checking it for injuries. “Who? Did they hurt you? Oh my moon, I swear they didn’t mean it, but I’m still going to eat them alive if they did anything.”
“No, no,” you assure him, stepping back. “We just played fetch all night.”
“O-oh, really? T-that sounds fun.” He looks to the floor with a sudden desire to play fetch too.
“Well, I’ll see you in bio?”
“Yeah, I guess,” he pouts to himself.
You reach over to comb down a piece of hair he missed earlier. Jisung’s eyes dart up upon your touch to see your tranquil morning face as you run your fingers through his locks.
“Bye!” you wave when you are done.
“Bye…” he returns, no longer pouting.
When the front door swings closed and you are gone, Jisung goes to retrieve his toothbrush and heads for the restroom.
“I’m sorry, Sweetcakes! I really am!”
Jisung raises his eyebrow at Hyunjin’s door.
“No! Don’t leave me! I swear it won’t happen again, I promise!” the man inside continues crying.
“No no no no. Please. Please! I’d do anything!” ... “Yes, anything!” … “Well, that’s, um, that’s kind of sudden, don’t you think?” ... “No, I’m not complaining. I’ll be right there.”
The door flies open, barely missing Jisung by a whisker. Hyunjin doesn’t even notice him as he darts out the door.
Well that’s weird, Jisung thinks to himself, wondering what could be wrong.
There’s 1 minute left before four in the morning, yet I’m still awake. I only sleep when the sun rises.
I am the moon. You usually see me at night but you can sometimes catch me at day time--daydreaming. You will see me shine brightly as I overlook and share a little of my light to the creatures who walk the dark alleys and to those who sleep in the streets.
The creatures usually ignore my existence and only remember me when they need someone to shed some light to their problems. No matter how bad they take me for granted, I’m still always there for them.
No matter how dark it is, I will share them my light. As I only shine the brightest and can be noticed when there is darkness. Afterall, I am the moon.
